Slat wall

anyone have some of this or similar?

I was thinking of making some but have 2 concerns

1: specs, I need some dimensions if anyone had some they might be able to get me the spacing and size of the slots

2: price, I have a bunch of salvaged lumber that may work well for this... needs R&D and testing to determine practicality. the stuff in the link runs about $8 a sq.ft.

Eric, one thing I noticed right off is that those sample pieces do not have metal tracks. I'm not sure how much weight that wall can hold, but I'd suspect that metal track slatwall will hold a heck of a lot more.

Here is what we have in a conference room. Hope it helps. We use light duty and heavy duty hooks. It can hold shelves, etc.

Remodeled a store in 91. If I recall correctly the price was about a dollar or two per square foot. It does need the metal in the channels if it is going to be used for anything heavy or used a lot.

Check the shopping centers for someone doing a remodel. When I was managing the shopping center, they would throw out sheets of that when doing a store over. It got to the point, when I stopped taking stuff home. Now, I wish that I had taken more. Gave all of the stuff away to others on the assumption that I could always get more. Never thought about retirement ending my collection method.

The stuff in Erics picture is an extruded plastic material. I believe it is the same basic recycled material that Trex decking is made from. The strength should be at least comparable to the metal inserts in real wood, if not stronger.

I would not however trust a material (homemade or purchased) that is simply raw wood routed with the slots.

edit: The full specs for the product Eric linked to are available here. 118-148 lbs per bracket maximum.

I believe you are correct on the material

I've seen slat wall that was nothing more than MDF with the slots milled in it. The wood I have is some old T&G flooring from a barn, looks like mahogany... very high quality, but old,... I've found it to be quite strong. I milled some down to 2.5" to use for fence pickets and similar. Too bad its still got some nails in it, cause it'd be real pretty if I ran it thru a planer. Table saw cutting isn't too bad if a guy is willing to sacrifice a blade. I need one of those belt sander planers.

118# per bracket would be more than sufficient for my needs.

I'm thinking of picking up some brackets on ebay and do a little destructive testing.

I found this place kinda local as a source of slat wall. 4x8 MDF panels for $51 with an attractive HPL finish... but the metal inserts like Bob has adds $68 to each panel. that equals $3.72 per sq ft with the inserts...not TOO bad... I'll be looking into these. weight rating is 36# or 75# with the reinforcement (per hanger).
