Single digits outside, Rattle from Furnace ...

House is warm but we have a rattle. Sounded like a screw fell into the birdcage fan of the blower and was bouncing around.

Went to investigate and it was gone before I got downstairs.

This pattern repeated intermittently over the past 48 hours.

Furnace would run without and rattle for a while, then the rattle would start, then it would stop . . .

FINALLY this morning I figured it out. Not the furnace. It is the auxiliary fan on the whole house humidifier. The fan only runs for part of the time that the furnace runs. The humidification pad is an aluminum and paper pad. It sagged a bit, the fan blade from the humidifier fan would contact part of that pad, the metallic clicking is the aluminum fan hitting the aluminum part of the pad.

Adjusted the pad, eliminated the noise. I don't have a replacement (which is odd because I usually buy 2 at a time).

Simple fix to an annoying problem, I'll swing by the hardware store and grab 2 or 3 replacements.

Honestly I was worried. The furnace was replaced 13 months ago. Sort of figured that whatever was wrong was 1 month beyond warranty. Glad it is just a minor part.
