Sickle Mower

Gone But Not Forgotten
I know you guys kind of talked me out of a sickle mower over a bush hog but a guy had in the paper a Ford Sickle Mower 7ft tonight. Went over and looked at it and was in great shape. Don't know the model as it was painted once but he is asking $350.00 for it along with two extra blades. Based on what I see the price is pretty good and I still kind of like the idea of the sickle mower over the bush hog. So what is everyone thinking, will my TC29 handle it? and is the price right? Does anyone know where on the rig might I find the model number and does anyone know of models that Ford made I should stay away from.

Do not know anything about the Ford mowers, however my NH1630 (slightly smaller than your TC29) handled a 9 foot JD sickle mower without a problem.

The price is in the ball park, I would check parts availability if needed, a lot of the farm stores will have the basic items such as guards, knives, etc.

Murph,

I've seen them run from $100 for broken ones to $400 for those in really good condition. Price is also influenced by where you are. As far as whether your machine can handle it, The 8n is a 28 hp machine and would run the mower fine. There should be a plate either riveted or tack welded to the main part of the frame with product info. However, sometimes these would come loose and fall off. They are great for banks and ditches and I loved mine (till it quit) It's not worth fixin but might be good for parts if I can find another like it.

Murph,
There was a recent (2-3 weeks) thread about a Ford Sickle mower on TBN, and I believe someone stated that on that particular model many parts were interchangeable with the NH 451 mower. You might try there for some info too.

I didn't do that...

I'm not very familiar with the Ford's but I wouldn't expect there to be any issue with your TC29 on a 7-footer. Heck, a Farmall Cub could easily run a 5'.

There's a couple tricks you'll want to learn. I wish I recall what they were but I don't have a mower in front of me (I'm on the road). If you do it right, it comes apart very easily and quickly. Always use rivots. That's what I can recall from here.

I went over and had another look at it. He hooked it up to his TC29DA and it worked great. It is set up for an 861 right now and would have to have a few minor adjustments to make it work. The arms don't match up to the TC29D or DA but could make work. It is a M501 Ford Sickle mower. Still have the tag on it. His 29 handled it really good but it was one of them things, you know you get that sick feeling in your stomach and he was pressuring me to buy and had two others he was holding off. I told him I was not ready to make up my mind and if the two others said no that he was to call me back. So I am sickleless for right now. I may have left a good deal go but it won't be the first time and it won't be the last. Maybe the others won't take it and he will come back 50 less.
