Shooting Moles?

Anyone ever used a shotgun to shoot moles? I used to remember an old neighbor that would walk around his yard in the evening with his shotgun.

I have no idea if it works but it sounds like fun.

Questions:

How much damage to the lawn?

What gun to use? .410 or 12 Gauge

How far back do you stand (or how close)?

Final question: Is this one of those things that falls into the PONS category if I some how kill myself? Actually, I figure with my luck I'll just end up getting some buckshot in my 'nads and suffering extreme embarassment.

I think that before I shot directly into the ground beneath my feet I'd want to know that there were not some large rocks directly under the surface for the pellets/bullets or slugs to rebound off of.

By the way, if you do kill yourself doing this, I'd be happy to nomiate you for a DARWIN AWARD

One of my hunting buddies actually does this. Uses a 20 ga. with 8 shot I think.
Watches for them to move in their tunnels and blasts into the ground.
My MIL does the same thing but uses a pitch fork.
