She survived!

I see heart rending things as a pediatric nurse. Last night, I had the priviledge to care for a little 4 month old child who was born prematurely. The amazing thing is that she survived an early term abortion attempt. The mother was prescribed methotrexate and ru486. They failed to terminate the pregnancy and for some reason she did not pursue a follow up method.

The baby survived and appears to be neurologically intact...may have some learning disabilities but physical defects are pronounced. She has 3 fingers and a thumb on each hand. She has cranial malformation....in other words, her head is misshapen... a very high forehead and her eye sockets are so large, her eye brows are over soft tissue instead of bone. Her "soft spots" are closed over because the bones of the head are overlapping. She only has 1 of the two lower leg bones in each leg. He arms are bent at the elbows because the ligaments are too short. She is cute as a button despite the physical abnormalities. She had open heart surgery last week to repair a cardiac defect. She is also in foster care with a terrific family and the foster mom has not left the bedside the entire hospitalizaton. This little girl is stubborn! How else did she survive an abortion attempt!

Very amazing indeed! You are correct, caring for these little miracles is a privilege.

Amazing how often there is a special foster family or adoptive family ready to jump in during these situations.
Once we get moved and settled in, we have been throwing around the idea of another adoption, possibly one with special circumstances... But sometimes you second-guess yourself and wonder if you would have what it takes to be that strong for that different situation.

As I was doing my taxes last night and adding up various expenses incurred during the adoption process, it made me reminisce and recall all of the things that happened each step of the way and how very blessed we are for our daughter. There are times where we thought government red-tape was going to take over and she would end up in the "system". Even though she was born into less than perfect circumstances, I am so thankful her birth mother chose to give birth, rather than what could have happened.

:flowers: >>> for you, CG, for the work you do. It's times like this that you earn the title of "Real American Hero"

You have my deepest respect, you really do.

(((HUGS)))

It is a miracle she lived, but who's miracle? This little girl will probably suffer a few more surgeries before doctors quit trying to make her normal. The miracle to me is the "foster Mom" there night and day. It sounds like they will be a blessing for each other.
The birth mother needs to be sitting by that baby's side just watch to pain she has caused.
