Serta Memory Foam Mattress ???

dzalphakilo

Banned
Ok, in between some work issues, went out with the wife to look at a bedroom funiture set. Found a nice one on sale, King size bed and all.

Now, keep in mind, before I met my wife (2 1/2 years ago) I never owned a bed or T.V in my life (really).

Ok, start to look at mattresses and get sticker shock on my end:eek:

Looking at a Serta memory foam mattress with box spring, king size for $1300.

Anyone have one of these? is it worth the extra money?

Keep in mind, my wife does have some lower back issues for which she's going to the "cracknback" doctor for.

I'm thinking (and I have no clue) that this "memory foam" may give her better support. She says buy what I would like except for the $399 special. Is this mattress worth $1300?

Thanks

We have a Cal King Serta mattress, but it is not the memory foam (it is the model that they advertise bouncing a bowling ball on it and not feeling the movement nearby). I'm not sure what it cost when we bought it but it was around the same price as what you are looking at. Let me tell you, this thing is worth every bit of money it cost. It may sound corny, but a consistent good night's sleep is priceless. The only problem is that it is difficult for me to sleep comfortably anywhere else!

We have a Serta foam mattress, not sure if it is the model you are looking at or the one Bonehead has or even a different one. I absolutely love it. We've had it for just about 2 years and I'd never go back to something else. I travel quite a bit, usually short trips, and I have a heck of a time getting to sleep on a regular mattress.

Make a note of the model and then shop until you find a price that you can live with. The mark up on mattress's is ridiculous. About 4 times cost and sometimes more. The memory foam mattress's are very comfortable, but not for everyone. A lot of places say that you can try it for 30,60, or even 90 days and exchange it if you are not happy. Problem is that they won't refund your money, just give you something else, and if that "else" is less expensive, they keep the difference. Going out to buy a mattress is like going to the dentist...... you never know how much it is going to cost or how much it is going to hurt, but it is one of those things that you have to do occasionally. One other problem is that they never sell exactly the same model to another store in the same geographic area, so this makes shopping even harder.

Bob, anytime I'm out of state for work and have to stay overnight, I will not get to sleep until at least 1:30 am no matter how exhausted I am.

Well these wonderful foam mattresses at home make the traditional mattresses feel like torture devices so you;re going to be in worse shape on business trips trying to get to sleep on a hotel mattress.

I have the Tempur-Pedic brand bed. Here is a link to the exact model we have: http://www.tempurpedic.com/TempurCMSVB/sleepsystems/deluxe/
I tried about 2 dozen of the knock offs, but not one of them was nearly as comfortable as the real thing. I am not nearly as thrilled with their pillows though.

The beds are very different from a conventional mattress. It is not as heavy as a waterbed, but it is much heavier than a standard mattress. We brought ours home on a cool day, and it was like trying to walk a 200 pound 7' tall Gumby up the stairs and down the hall. I don't sleep much, so any sleep I can get is very important to me. I also have 3 ruptured discs in my back that I've opted to not have surgery on. I can honestly say that I've never slept on as comfortable of a bed as the Tempur-Pedic Deluxe-Bed I have. I even tried the sleep number bed, but sent it back. In a queen size, it has this weird divider in the middle and my wife and I both ended up smashed together there. No setting was comfortable. It is a $1300 double air mattress with a block of foam in the middle.

Now for the bad part about the Tempur-Pedic. It "off gasses" for about 2 months. It really has a particular smell to it for a couple of weeks. In my case, that smell caused the absolute worse migraine headaches I've ever had. :( I had to move the bed to the other end of the house in my 14 year old daughter's room. She absolutely loved it and the smell never bothered her. It only bothered her when I reclaimed my bed.

I've never tried the Serta memory foam mattress that I recall. It seems that I tried all of the others though. None was as nice as the real thing. The standard model actual Tempur-Pedic mattress is about the same money as you are talking about for the Serta. For me, it was definitely worth the money, and it was also definitely worth going with the original memory foam mattress as well. Good luck with whatever you get!

I tried that excuse with my wife but she didn't fall for it. She already had enough of my "pull my finger" and "what's under the covers" jokes that she knew that any bad smell probably came from me. :fart2: :fart1:

We have a Select Comfort Sleep Number Mattress in King Size. I'm 95% sure it's the 5000 model, which is about in the middle of their range. List price is around $2,200, and that's pretty much what you pay -- you can only buy them in their own stores, and there doesn't appear to be any negotiation.

We paid a little more than half of that amount, because my wife is a Physical Therapist. Select Comfort had a promotion in which they offered the mattresses to physical therapists at a deep discount, expecting that the PT's would endorse and recommend their beds. They were right. We do recommend them highly. We both have been sleeping much more comfortably since we got it. The best part is the adjustablility; I have my side up about 85 (out of 100) and Betsy keeps her side around 55. That's an enormous difference; I actually feel like I'm falling downhill when I get too close to her side.

They're essentially air mattresses, but very complex and sophisticated air mattresses. The second best part is that they are truly separate; none of my movements affect Betsy, and vice versa.

We had a good foam mattress before that(an't remember the brand); the problem was it was not quite firm enough for me, and too firm for Betsy. We used the same foundations we had under the foam mattress for the Select Comfort matress.

I, too, was amazed at the prices they want for mattresses; no wonder there's a mattress store in every shopping center. We visited several before we bought the Select Comfort, and ended up not believing a word we heard from any of the sales people. Select Comfort put their money where their mouth is, as far as physical therapists are concerned, and their confidence in their product was validated.

We had the Select Comfort bed. I loved it. Never in my life did I sleep as well as I did on that thing. I ran it run up to the end of the 90 day trial. My wife just could not get use to it. However, rest assured, in the event of my wife passing I will go out and get another one. Man I would even feel great the next day like I reallly did sleep.

Dargo, every individual's eperience is different, but I had 2 ruptured discs in 1979. After about 6 weeks of rest and very conservative treatment to be certain that surgery was the best option, they opened up my back, scraped out the nucleus pulposa, rearranged the discs and sewed me back up again. I went from virtually disabled (due to sciatic pain) to fully recovered. The day I was released from the hospital I jumped on a Toro riding mower and mowed my lawn; I wasn't able to sit a few days earlier.

I have had no problems in the 27 years since, except for a very rare muscle spasm. I am NOT recommending any course of treatment for you; just reporting one person's experience. It helped that Betsy, as a professional physical therapist who saw their patients after surgery, was keenly aware of which were the best orthopedic surgeons in the area.

As for your experience with the Select Comfort mattress, that's why there are so many brands and types of mattresses. There is no "one size fits all" not any single best option for everyone.

I had a back injury a little over a year ago. At night I had a hell of a time going to sleep. We had a great $1800 dollar mattres before (yes sticker shock for sure). Well it was great until my injury. My doctor recomended one of those memory foam bed covers. About 2-1/2" thick. I found one at Costco for about $200. My doctor gave me a prescription and I was reimbursed fully! I now sleep all night with no issues with my back. These mattress covers are of the memory foam (Swedish foam). Not the egg crate junk. You simply unfold it on top of you mattress. It takes about 2 days to fully expand after being vaccum packed for so long. I bet you wifes doctor could get you a prescription. Good luck.

Isn't that the truth. I have one BIL that I talk to about every day. We get along great, but I generally like the opposite of what he does. He tried the Select Comfort bed and didn't like it. That is actually the reason I ordered one. :yum: No kidding. I have to wonder if there isn't a difference in the king size vs the queen. My BIL complained about rolling into the foam wedge in the middle just as I did. When you search the internet, which I did when I had that issue, you find numerous reports of people complaining the same about the queen size. I never did a search on a different size because I was only interested in opinions of the Select Comfort in the size I had.

On the back thing, the main reason I don't have surgery is because I only have back issues about a half a dozen days a year or so on average. It's really bad, actually crippling, when I do have problems. But, since it is fairly rare, I can live with it the way it is as opposed to the risks of surgery. Two of my three disc injuries came from hard landings back when I raced motocross. The third was when I got hit by a car in a Target parking lot back in college (I was running from him but the car was faster). Since all of those happened at a relatively early age, I seemed to have recovered from them and can function fine. Out of the three opinions I've gotten (for surgery), two did say to not have surgery now, but I may have to consider surgery in the future if I begin to have consistant problems. I'm glad to hear that yours worked out for you. Most of the guys I know who had surgery now carry around a big bottle of Lortabs and eat them like candy. I prefer Skittles if I want candy. :D

We purchased the memory foam topper and experianced the 2 month gassing period, which wasn't that bad. What I have found is that it moves on top of the other mattress and it never seems to be quite large enough to cover the entire top of the mattress. Other than that, I and the dogs love it. Haven't asked the wife, because I hate to give her an opening to complain about another thing. It hasn't changed her snoring habits, so I don't think that it has been beneficial overall...... .

If my wife will let me, I'll have to post a pic to show you what I have to deal with as far as dogs on the bed:D

Ended picking up a Seally (sp?) King size box and mattress today for $1149. had the "memory" foam and he went into detail on some other things, but my wife liked the mattress and honestly I wasn't paying attention since my wife liked it.
15 year non pro rated wrty on the mattress, and that 90 day deal that junk talked about.

Saw the bed Dargo has, and the one they had on display was over 6k:eek:

Like murph said,
We've had the Select Comfort matress since '94 and I've never had a bad night's sleep on it. But unlike murph, my wife took to it very well.
When we got the thing, I'd just had back surgery and I really believe that the matress helped rehab my back. Up till then, for months I'd been waking up in the middle of the night for pain killers. That first night, I never got up to get a pill - until around 4:00 in the afternoon of the next day.
d'kilo, the price you're talking about is about what we paid. :notworthy :wussie: :gun2_smi: :bitterCol :nopics: Wow, NEW smilies!

This is ONE reason I told my wife we have to get a king sized bed.

Ok, number one, the wallpaper is going to be removed (You should see the wallpaper in the kitchen) One of about 10 things we still have not gotten around to since we bought the house.

Number two, don't say anything about the dogs because if I would of looked at this picture before I got married, I know what I would of said to someone who had that many dogs on a bed:puke1:

I don't care what they think:pat:

It's not as bad a it looks, have a couple of beds on the floor, which they use. Seems to be "doggie roulette" as far as who wants to get up at what time of night.

It would be however nice to hold my wife at night some times:D

Are you sure they would not be happier with their own room?:D

It's just my wife an myself in the house for now. Have three extra bedrooms and they only want to be around us at night. When I met my wife three years ago, she only had the yellow lab. The lab always slept with her. Since we found a couple of extra (one at a time of course) since we've met, she didn't want to "penalize" the lab bacause we had an extra dog in the house. It gets interesting when we want to have some "quality" time with each other. They will stay outside any bedroom door in the bedroom that we are in (when it's closed) and stay there and sometimes wine (ok, wine alot) and inevitably (sp?) we let them in.

Two are foster dogs (we work with the human society) and if you would of seen where they had come from, you can't help but want to "spoi"l them (yes, for better or worse).

We have a king size bed, and a great dane that, as a pup, was let on the bed to stop the whinning. Now she's just 8 months old and 97 pounds. She's over 6' tall standing on her hind legs. She still thinks she should be welcome on the bed.
Once in awhile the wife lets her up on her side. I can't ever do that. I take up enough space myself.

But ..... I thought you'd be posting telling us about your new mattress set.
How do you like it?

Well...

Will be taking a truck over to pick the mattress and box springs tommorow night. For the price, we did get a deal.

Ordered a full bedroom set that was supposd to be in next week (had to order the king size bed). Furniture guys calls and say hw wont be able to get the bed in for at least 3-4 months.

Might end up taking a drive to Hickory and find something. Took off early today and couldn't find a thing. Consider myself lucky that my wife and I seem to have the same taste. We both agree that with any dogs, it would be crazy to spend big $ on a furniture set.

Furniture guy said he would "float" us a frame for the mattress until the furniture came in that we ordered.

Wife is at a meeting tonight. We have something to think about.
