SCUBA and takin' pics

I'm headin' to Key Largo in 2 weeks for some SCUBA and I'm gonna try out my new underwater digital camera case (with camera inside -- in case the smartasses want to respond -- you know who you are, Mr. Nay). I already tried it out in the pool at the local dive shop and it seemed to work fine. I'm wondering if there are certain macros or other settings others have tried to get the best underwater pics? What about the flash? Any concerns about pissin' off the marine life (don't wanna agitate any cudas or sharks ....). Pic of me in the pool (the water was filthy).

I have been using a Canon waterproof case and had very good results. The case fits pocket Canon cameras. Clearly not a professional quality case but it does the job.

As for the flash, figure it is good for about 1/3 the normal distance. So if your flash is rated for 10' on land then you will be lucky to get much over 3' worth of flash while underwater.

Thanks for the info, Bob. Did you use any special macro for the underwater pic? At what depth was it taken? I'm not anticipating any deep dives this trip -- maybe 45-60' at most and I'm wonderin' how the pics will come out. My case looks similar to yours, but it's made by Fantasea.

When we were more active in diving, we had the old Ikelite housing for disposables camera's. Worked surprisingly well. We enjoyed diving on the Channel Islands. We did a number of 3 day trips with Truth Aquatics on the Vision and Conception. Awesome way to dive...

Back in the day before digital proliferated, the Vision and Conception both had wet labs on board. Usually every evening there would be a slide show. Digital does make that a lot easier.

We never had any issues with using the flash. Loss of light wavelength past 45' will show in pictures...

The fish picture was probably at 12'

No special macro settings. Just push the idiot button on the top of the camera and let the camera do the work.
