Snowtrac Nome

member formerly known as dds
as you guys are putting your pretty snow cats away for the season i'm now just getting ramped up for some long trips this one took me out 47 miles from nome at an average speed of about 10mph because the last storm left things so rough i manned a check point with ems and the local ham club for a big snowmachine race on the iditarod trail between nome and golivin i was up inthe hills gps said 800 feet which made for a nice veiw when i hit the coast comming back i left at 0600 in the morning and was back intown at 2000 in the evening with the sun still up the days will be getting longer now i'm planning on taking this next week off to shuttle people in the snow cat on the way out my electric fuel pump died so i put on my mcgyver hat and relocated the fuel tank on top of the snow trac than pulled out my texas credit card hooked it up between the fuel tank and carb giving a suck on the hose to get fuel flowing and had some one else comming this way on a snowmachine drop off a new fuel pump things went smooth for me didn't have to evac any riders out but the bv206 closer to town had to pull 2 riders out one with a compound fracture in a femer the other rider went out on a back board with unknown injurys

the snow cat season is just ramping up for me lots of snow cover and long days we had a bad weather first part of winter lots of storms and no visability the temp this weekend was around 20 but felt like 40 or 50 with uv light raidating off the snow on the way home i stopped to take some pics of the frozen bering sea and i know 800 feet isn't much but the climb out of the flats was streight up and a steady climb for about 1/2 hour and looking at the sky the whole time several hills in the valleys it was all the littlee st could do to pull the loaded trailer up i was spinning the tracks it would have likely killed a lesser machine like a krusty comming out of the hills the trail gets narrow in the willows and the snow is 20 feet deep i was trying to stay to the side of the trail when the little st slipped in and wouldnt pull back up so i took a stab at the soft snow and wallowed out on to the pwder over the willows and back over to the trail again the little red snow track just amazed me i thaught this would be the first time i was going to get stuck on the coast i took spme pics of where the sorms had pushed a wall of ice 20 to 30 feet high over the road this past winteer can't see how dot. deals with this one

Cool pics, great idea with the fuel tank....good to know, was that an iron man sled race? i think i saw one on the tele once. how old is your furry little co-pilot?

ike is about 4 months now we nursed him off a bottle his mom was killed by a rabbid dog on new years day he came to us as a demmocrat now he is a republican as you can see his eyes are now open. the trailer was built that way it was intended to be pulled bu a rnger tracked rig and works good on the snow trac its the best option around here where the ground can be wind blown bare for miles at a time

Great pics Don,

I see you might have added snow flaps in the back ....Does it keep the rear window cleaner? Just wondering, mine is aways getting covered with snow dust.

I am so jealous of your SNOW!

Regards, kirk

the flaps only work to keep mud out of the trailer they don't help much with snow dust i'm running charers this week for iditarod so i'm racking up the miles
