Just another one of the many stories we see each winter when campers go up into the mountains and get stranded in the snow. And this story is just another reminder that in the winter, if you are in a snow area, you really need to keep plenty of supplies in your car in case of an emergency.

Snowfall envelopes RV near Ore. border

A local couple was rescued Sunday after becoming stranded while camping on Oregon Mountain for the past week.

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a married couple being in distress around 4:45 p.m. They exhausted their camping supplies and were unable to get back down the mountain because of snow, authorities said.

“They went up there before the snow started falling and they just stayed up there a little too long,” said Peggy Thomas, assistant coordinator for Del Norte Search and Rescue.

The two were camping on Oregon Mountain Road near the Oregon state border as snowfall from the past week enveloped their vehicle, Thomas said.

After running out of supplies and being immobilized, they were able to find a signal to dial Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, which then contacted the local sheriff’s office, Thomas said.

The couple huddled in their car until help arrived, Thomas said.

Del Norte County Search and Rescue was unable to reach the couple, so Josephine County Search and Rescue aided. The team used a snowcat to climb up the north side of Oregon Mountain Road, Thomas said.
