Rough day at my house

Last night our Great Dane Bailey Blue appeared to be having a reaction to something she ate. I talked to vet and he advised giving her 2 benadryl. Didn't seem to help. She was still hurting, and coughing up foam and a little liquid this morning. I took her to the vets but she never made it out of the vehicle. He said her organs were shutting down, she was close to death and then, as if on queue, she passed while we talked. I was afraid this was comng and had pet and talked to her while waiting on the vet. Damn this was tough. She was such a good girl. She would have been 10 on May 30th and the vet said normal life span for this breed was 7 to 10 years ....so she had done well. I never would have thought 10 years could fly so fast. Seems like no time.
RIP Bailey Blue. We miss you girl.

Damn Doc that's terrible. I know how much you and Gail feel about your Great Danes. Sorry for your loss.

:(
Doc, Gretchen had nearly the same thing happen to her not all that long ago.
She started coughing, then fell over and seemed to pass out.
Her vet said it was due to her collapsed trachea.
I've been back to see him once again with her since to get some reassurance.
He showed me the x ray he'd taken on the initial visit when he was so casual about it all.
So, I didn't worry.

If she goes into the hacking spell which is a whole lot like a reverse sneeze, I give her the Benadryl.
He also told me to stop using a collar around her neck, but to use a harness while walking. Not that she can do that much walking outside these days.

I am so very sorry to hear about Bailey.
Losing pets is a whole other kind of grief which many don't understand.

So this is where we part, my friend
And you'll run on, around the bend
Gone from sight, but not from mind
New pleasures there, you'll surely find
I will go on, I'll find the strength
Life measures quality, not it's length

One long embrace before you leave
One last look, before I grieve
There are others, that much is true
But they be they, and they aren't you
And I fair, impartial.. or so I thought
Will remember well, all you've taught

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed
The fur I stroked, that nose I kissed
As you've made the journey to final rest-
Take with you this
I loved you best

Sorry to hear of your loss, Greg!! We went thru it w/ our 17 yr old dog in Nov. Now we can talk of the happy times we had w/ her.
Wonderful poem, PG!!

They come and go in our lives. We miss them so much because we... well, we remember them.

As our lives go on,, isn't that the good part?

So sorry for your loss Doc.

So sorry for your loss.

I've lost dogs in the past and it sure doesn't get any easier but the memories they left us with will last forever.

Sorry to hear the news. As a man who has has 3 dogs right now, and the oldest s 14 (small dog) I will go through it again, soon.

Never is easy.

Sorry to hear this Greg.

May there be a doggy heaven with green fields to play and cats to chase.

Thanks everyone!!! Yep, it sure is tough. So many reminders of her everywhere at home. We've moved some to the basement but it will take time to move on.

Danes are a special breed. So loving. So easily trained. Their size does lend itself to quite a bit of special planning but due to short life span I'll never own another one. It is simply to hard to go through the loss. :(

It's weird how news like this hits me, it so hard to comment. I've been though it a bunch and it's tough. My sincerest sympathies Doc .......

Sure understand that Big Guy. Each time a member posts something like this it's tough. We all know this happens but we dread the day it enters our house.

Been there too many times with family pets. It's never easy, but we all know the day will come. We're just thankful for their unconditional love while they're here. We've decided to stay pet free until one or the other of us retires and stays home so the dog is not left alone.
