replace snow trac transmission

I have found a mechanic willing to replace my transmission on my st4. Does any one have any detailed steps of how to disassemble then reassemble everything. He was not happy with my take engine out take variator out, take transmission out and then put it all back together again. He wanted some more detailed specs especially on the reassemble and readjustment. He doesn't want to miss anything.

I don't know of any documents other than the owner/operator manual. That would show some of the parts and exploded diagrams but its not going to show a step by step process.

Do you have (or need) a manual?

there is a post where i did this early in this spring with lots of pics or pm me and i could give you the run down

thank you everyone for the quick replies. i do have a manual however my 1962 st4 is really two machines modified into one. those links really helped a lot. i will keep everyone informed of the progress.

i spoke with the mechanic today having printed many of the links and other items. i guess what he would like is something like a chiltons st4 manual. any idea if something like that exists?

would anyone be willing to pm me your phone and a good time to call so he can just talk about what he is getting into. I dont think he will have any real problems but he is hesitant.

nothing but Lyndon exists and the translated versions of the origional st-4 manuals posted on this web site exist feel lucky the first st-4 i worked on as a kid had the origional manual that came with the st-4 it was written in sweedish

transmission is out

well its taken awhile but we have it all taken apart and are trying to figure out just what transmission to get. the question the mechanics have asked is:

can a 68 bug transmission be used?

can the ring gear be switched from the passenger side to the drivers side? it seems the one transmission we took apart appeared to be backwards to teh one in the machine.

there was also a problem with something being paddles vs slotted but i have forgotten that. they were going to look at the bus transmission to see if the size was the same.

here is whatt i found out about on my trans and i can put you intouch with these guys if you want they had a new one built and mailed out to me in a week for $450.00 the transmission is an early bug with the ring gear flipped and an early bus style shift tower mine was shipped with a bug tower on it and because it was sealed i wanted to keek it wich ment changing my tunnel cover a bit hope this helps if you want i will put you in touch with the buggy shop as a note the transmission is small enough it can be mailed us-mail about 75 bucks to ak as oppposed to 300 for ups

In case you have been wondering Good news, took snow trac out yesterday for first time. transmission has been replaced.

some details:
took us awhile to get it all apart, 15 hours. 10 hours to put it back in.
Contacted Ron at Carcraft in CA, could not find a transmission that would fit so we sent him ours, he rebuilt it and sent it back, about $500 including shipping. about 3 weeks total time, 1 week each way shipping, 1 week rebuilding.
My mechanic who has all the pictures is going to right his notes (hopefully) and i will share when does.

in the mean time the test run went well :)

it was created in WA by putting two machines together and has no number plate :( i bought it from Peterson Equipment in Utah, 62 was the year most of the parts came from i guess.
