Redtail Hawk was circling over our little dog

Was out early this morning with the little Maltese Snowball out playing in the yard while we were doing some planting, mulching, etc.

Snowball, all 7# of feisty fangs and claws, was out rolling around on his back in yard away from us, in a clearing area with no trees. I look up and there is a red tail hawk, not 30 feet up in the air doing a circle over the little doggy.

Called the dog, spoiled the hawks breakfast, story ended happily for Snowball.

I've seen Red Tails come in for kills and grab their prey, seen them fly off with squirrels, rabbits, etc. The birds are very common around our property. Never watched one circle my wife's little dog before.

We worry about that with the little chihuahua as we have a lot of hawks around here. I don't think they could lift the pom and he looks bigger than he really is with all that hair. Besides that the GSD is almost always out with them.

We have quite a bit of tree cover in a lot of areas, but the particular area where Snowball was rolling around was tree free and the hawk, if it had decided to swoop in, could have done so. Of course, once we saw it my wife did the proverbial B-line to the dog to rescue him.

My wife's little Yorkie got picked up and carried off by an owl one morning. The dog showed up coming across the pasture three days later, talon marks in her sides and pretty beat up. She must have fought pretty hard. The vet said it was a miracle she made it back. So, it does happen...little dogs are not much different than a large rabbit to a large bird.

where are the pics of your dog my boy's dog is a registered Maltese dachshund mix his name is sarge here a pic. I worry he looks like a little white weasel I watch him pretty close in the back country an owl might think he looks yummy. on the plus side he has already alerted me to a bear sneeking up on me once he got extra goodies for that.
