Red Beefsteaks in a Topsy-turvy planter

Last year, I put a Betterboy plant in my Topsy-turvy planter and got lots of fruit, but they were smaller (between golf ball and billiard ball sized). I had the beginnings of fruit within 4 weeks of planting.

This year, I wanted bigger tomatoes, so I planted a Red Beefsteak. I'm now beyond the 4 week mark, and nothing. I've got plenty of buds and flowers, but the stems on them are so small and fragile, they often just break off. The plant looks very healthy and has been growing rather vigorously. Are Beefsteak plants dramatically different than Betterboys? Any feedback y'all could offer would be much obliged!

Where is Muleman when you need him?

Blah.. I was going to plant a salsa garden this year, but the weather has been so nuts, I gave up.
Good luck with your 'maters Jim. :)

Don't know that they are much different. Sounds more like a nutrient is lacking if they are weak. I am getting small fruit this year as well. They make good kabobs on the grill. As far as those upside down planters we have have made flower planters out of them this year. Weather has had major impacts on planting for everyone this year. Folks around me are all having similar problems with their plants so it is not something we are doing wrong. My vine plants all seem to be doing great(squash, pumpkins, watermelons).

I'm with Muleman. I'd hit them with some MiracleGro once every 2 weeks.

I put my first batch of tomatoes in the garden a month ago and hit them with some MG after a couple weeks (and will do so again soon). The change in the plant health after applying the MG was incredible. Plants grown from seeds that were 2" tall when I put them in the ground doubled in size every 2 days. The larger plants already have decent sized tomatoes (for this time of year).
