Rebuilding a "Hay Field"

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
Last year I picked up another piece of ranch property and dozed the buildings under and reseeded it in Pasture grass that was custom blended for this area of Idaho . I overseeded it again 3 weeks ago . This is dry pasture . Grass is beginning to show but I wonder if it is best to keep animals off it and not hay it for another year ???
Thoughts on this ????

You should be able to get one cutting and then leave it alone so any additional growth helps potect it this coming winter.

Should I bale the hay or leave the cut grass to lay and act as a insulation cover ??

That woulddependon whenyou cut it and what kind of season you expect.

Spring cut, I'd, go ahead and bale it.

Late summer, leave it lay to keep gound moisture up.

We get some pretty severe winters up here . -20 to -40 below are pretty common . Thanks guys !
