Rattrac Rolba w OC12 diff.

I picked up a rolba Rattrac with the ford 6, 3 speed, and oc12 diff and a blade. Changing the diff fluid and it’s coming out gray.

What would cause this? Is it water contamination?

Hi and welcome. I have seen transmission fluid come out grayish when water was getting into it. so, I'd say yes, you might have water sneaking in.

Do you get much snow in the back country of Turkey?

Could also be fine metal mixed in with it. Does it have a magnetic drain plug by chance? Maybe try swirling a magnet in the oil to see what sticks. ATF is the wrong oil. Might be brake band material too.

Ok thanks for the reply.
Yes we get huge amounts of snow from storms coming off the Black Sea. We are in the coastal range just 50km from om the Georgian-a Turkish border

The diff is running smooth and cool, so my initial thought wasn’t about metal or damage. But I’ll put a magnet in it to test.
Atf isn’t my preference either, but finding a TO-4 equivalent in Turkey is not easy. We will have some imported the next time we change the diff oil
