Rattle snake bit the dog !

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
My nieghbor and I drove to Reno today to help a friend . When he returned home this evening he found that a rattlesnake had crawl into the dog pen and bit one of the 7 dogs in there . A real sweet english pointer named Sam . $250 bucks later the dog will be fine but the rattler was no where in sight.
The dog pen is a very crude mickey mouse arrangement with 2 big dog houses surronded by 6' chain link fence . Tomorror I guess my nieghbor is going to tear it down and move the big dog houses looking for the snake . I ain't going to be no where around ! I hate snakes !
I'm surprized a snake would even be close to where 7 dogs were in a pen .

During a very dry season a rattle snake will seek water. I would bet the dog pen had water. When we lived rural south of Sheridan the rattle snakes would come out of the dry hills behind us in mid summer seeking water either in yards or head to the creek in the valley. As any creature they need moisture of some kind to survive or so it seems. Only during the real dry seasons were they a problem around the house. We got use to contending with them but never did like them. Shot shells in a pistol do a good job of eliminating snakes but leave a mess to clean up.

I have never seen a live rattler in the wild around my place. I know they are there because a good friend of mine hit one in the road about a hundred yards north of my place last year. I have always found it funny that in all the miles I have traveled down a county blacktop near where we live I have never seen on. They have always called it "Rattlesnake Road." I will have to ask princess if the clinic stocks much in the way of meds to treat bites.

I wonder if a half dozen feeder mice from the pet store would help bait the snake into the open?

We see snakes all the time, but not a poison snake. We have two huge Indigo's that live under the house. We see them ever ones in while in the yard. They eat mice, and not us, so we leave them alone. We know there are poison snakes around, because our pets come up missing for no reason, or we have found them dead. We've seen our dogs in the past playing around batting their paws at them.

I used to see Rattlesnakes all the time when I used to hike around Orlando and Gainesville. They are there! My dogs used to do these amazing leaps whenever they saw snakes - for Canadian dogs they were lucky to inherit those good survival instincts.

See the dog across the pasture leaping around and we know what she found So we call her! sometimes she comes and sometimes she plays:shock:
The other day our tom cat came in the back door and the kids left a toy snake on the floor. The cat did back flips to get away from it, and ran out of the room. I had to pick him up and hold him close while covering his eyes to get him back thru that room for his food in the laundry room.

I went over to the nieghbor and told him about the water and mice thing that a few folks have mentioned here . He told me he has a huge rat problem . So I guess he now knows what to do . Clean up his mess . Thanks for the input
