Racial Slur or Accident?

Sounds like the beginning of a joke, but did you hear about the DJ that was fired for making a slur about Rice? You can read the whole story here, but a DJ was fired for making what he called an accidental racial slur about Secretary of State Rice. From the article:
On his show, Lenihan said: "She's been chancellor of Stanford. She's got the patent resume of somebody that has serious skill. She loves football. She's African-American, which would kind of be a big coon. A big coon. Oh my God. I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that."
He said he had meant to say "coup" instead of the slur. KTRS president and general manager Tim Dorsey agreed that the remark was accidental but announced the same day that Lenihan had been fired
What do you guys think? I do think that it was an accident and that the manager of the station fired the DJ just to cover his ass. I don't think he should have been fired.

Sure sounds like an accident, no one in their right mind would go and say something so stupid on the air.:pat:

Either fire him, or loose the station license. It isn't like the old days, where a mistake was a mistake. Today, the Bush Administration runs the country just like things used to be a half a world away. You don't have to kiss your freedom away, because it was taken from you about 5 years ago. It is called the Patriot Act....

He said something he shouldn't have. Yes he caught himself and apoligised but if he said it on the radio station more than likely he has said it before and that is what most people will think and if the radio station does nothing it will mean a lot of people going to a different radio station. He more than likely made a slip of something he has said previously.

He had only been working there something like 2 weeks. Kind of a sad PC situation where if you slip they can (and will) ruin your career. I listened to an interview of this guy and I believe that it was a slip. Should he have been fired? I don't know. I understand the management's point of view, but that doesn't make it right.

Political correctness is another left wing diversity (perversity) situation run amok. Had nothing to do with the Patriot Act or the Bush Administration, Junkman. It had more to do with the station management covering their ass from the ACLU clowns who will file a lawsuit as soon as they can. Another left wing hate group, looking out for the little guy.

I never said that it did...... that was a snide side comment ....

I may get nailed for saying this , but this “racial slur business” is way over rated . Can’t we just let it die peacefully ?
I am “Color Blind “ . I really don’t give a damn what color someones skin is . A bad person is bad and a good person is good .
We all grew up and heard racial slurs directed toward different color people at one time or another . Does that make it ok to use these slurs now ? No, it does not . Times are changing and what was standard 50 years ago is not ok today . We have all heard or told the jokes directed at one race or nationality and we have all laughed . People are afraid to even talk about this .
This guy made a mistake and apologized but was terminated for fear of the FCC and black citizens rising up in protest and yelling racism . Would the same thing happen if a radio announcer made a racial slur comment about a white “Secretary of State” . I don’t think so and no one would give it a second thought . Is this a double standard ? You bet your butt it is . Every day you can turned on the Comedy Channel and hear Black comedians using the N word over and over and over !!!! When they pan the black audience the people are rolling in the aisles laughing at this guy . So who is keeping this alive now ??? If a white comedian tries this they will bury him . Remember what happened to Ted Danson when he did the comedy stint when dating Whoopie Goldberg ??? They buried him for that one and he ended up apologizing over and over .
I hear the “Hey Whitey” comments all the time and I don’t go ballistic . I get called “Gringo” in Panama and I could care less . That’s what I am . You say “Hey blackie” or “wetback” and you better be ready for the sh#t to hit the fan . If it is bad for other color races to be called by racial slurs should it not also be bad to do the same thing to a white race ??? Sometimes people have just run out of things to do and need to stir up trouble !!! If they hate it so much then they need to clean up there own mouth first .
Like I said at the start , I am Color blind and don’t give two hoots what color skin someone is . If they are a good person then they are a good person and if they are a bad person than they are a bad person . I have friends of all colors . One of them is my brother .

He probably should have handled it differently. Perhaps if , in his sentence, he would have said: "this is kind of a coon, sorry, coup, for.... "

Perhaps if he would have made less emphasis on it, and just kept speaking, then it would have been accepted for what it probably was.. a mispronunciation/ accidental wrong word choice, even if it was a fruiedian slip (spelling? ). I think this nation has become just a tad too PC... p[erhaps everyone needs to loosen thier tie, and or straps / bondage just a little bit and relaxe more:thumb:

that's my take anyway.

The more I think of it, the more it pisses me off that the guy was fired. Would they have done the same thing to a "non-white" if he had said the word "honkie" instead of "honker"? Or how about the word "kike" instead of the word "bike" when talking about a Jewish cyclist (I can say the word because I'm Jewish).

It seems rediculous to fire a guy and potentially ruin his career over the saying of an "n" sound where there should have been no sound (coon vs coup).

I will the first to admit, I have no idea what coon means... not sure most Americans would know either. I am surprised BoneheadNW knew what it meant.. he is smarter then he makes himself out to be.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coon

but why do they have a Coon Festival in South Africa every year and no one get bent out of shape?

If the word is so offensive, why are there 4 places in the US with "coon" in the name?

Depends (get it?):yum:on the beaver. Most taste like fish, although, and I have only been told, some in the San Francisco area taste like snake.:yum:

Note that I am laughing to myself while the others here at work eat their dinner. Time to post before they investigate.

snake!!! yikes... I hate the old bate and switch. By the way, I am told that people in China and Taiwan eat snake instead of oysters. For the same purpose. I was wondering what it tasted like.. but now I don't think I want to find out.

How about "looks like meat, smells like fish, and taste like chicken?"

Depends? Snakes?

Also, I personally avoid the kind with it's own barbeque sauce, but hear some prefer it that way.

Finally, I've heard of the kind that looks like a pepperoni pizza with extra cheese; the advice: "run away, run away!":puke1:

Seattle or FF??? :D
Of course, just because I'm crazy enough to write it doesn't mean everyone isn't already thinking it..........

I think the guy got fired because the boss didn't like him and he gave the boss an excuse. I wouldn't read too much more into it.

Rattlesnake meat is pretty bland. Too many bones and not enough meat.

Alligator - now that's some good eating!
