question about brakes on a 1971 SW48

Hey guys... this is my 1st tracked vehicle so I don't know much about it. I don't have a service manual. Are they availible anywhere?

I'm curious how hard should I have to pull back on the brake levers before the sw48 will turn?

I ask because I have to pull back really hard before it turns. It seems like maybe I need to adjust the brakes or the levers or ???.

I did see some adjust nuts at the bottom of the levers... at the pivot point.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Here's my new toy. This pic was taken last year by the previous owner.

Congratulations !! That is a nice looking machine !

These machines don't turn very sharply . If your levers work unevenly, tighten the big nut at the base of the lever that works the worst. Start out with only a half or one turn and see if it helps.
When the levers are resting, they should both be about 3-4" from the dashboard.

If tightening the nut doesn't change anything, you might have a broken brake band or they could need resurfacing.

Boggie at Minnesota Outdoors has manuals.( He's a member here )

thanks. My levers are about 1-2 inches from the dashboard. They are a little out of sync too. I'll try the adjusting like you mentioned.

boogie if you see this... PM me about a manual.

1-2" is too close...you will need to back off the nuts.
Set the levers back to 3" and see if the steering is better. You may have had your brakes dragging or you may need to re-line them.

I'm pretty sure the brakes aren't currently dragging because it will roll downhill easily in neutral. But I will still back them off. thanks

Does anyone out here have an SW48 and can take a couple close-up pics of their door hinges? Mine were replaced with some whimpy hinges that can't hold the weight of the doors. I don't know why someone would have done that?

I need to figure out what the original hinges look like so I can fix mine.

thanks!
