Proposed Canadian Law would jail Proponents of Oil/Natural Gas

A Canadian bill could put people in jail for saying that fossil fuels are good.

Sort of reminds me of the law in England that put a guy in jail, who was 50 meters away from an abortion clinic and quietly praying by himself for the baby he & his wife aborted. The guy ended up in jail for 4 years. And similar things have happened here in the US.

Just not sure what happened to free speech, civil discourse, even discussing economic or scientific reality.

Canadian bill would send people to prison for saying anything favorable about oil, gas or coal

Among other things, the bill would criminalize statements of fact, such as saying natural gas has lower emissions than coal.

A bill introduced in the Canadian House of Commons would ban making statements that might promote the use of fossil fuels.
Charlie Angus, a member of the Canadian Parliament and the New Democratic Party, said in a statement that the bill would “make illegal false advertising by the oil and gas industry.”
. . .
The preamble of the bill blames multiple examples of bad weather on the fossil fuel industry and compares its products, which are the basis of over 80% of the world’s primary energy and thousands of everyday consumer goods, to the use of tobacco.
According to the National Post, the bill so broadly defines “false advertising” that it could apply to any statement favorable to the oil and gas industry, including an “I Love Canadian Oil and Gas” bumper sticker. The bill would also criminalize statements of fact, such as suggesting that natural gas has fewer emissions than coal.
The bill would impose fines as high as $500,000 or two years in prison for anyone saying anything nice about the coal, oil and gas industry.
While Angus argues that fossil fuels are killing people, in the time the globe has been exponentially increasing its use of fossil fuels, life expectancy has doubled. . .

How about that! And the Canucks will say how great their freedoms are.
Next is thought police.
You gave up your guns.
Now they can do what they want with you.
You simply don't get it, the second amendment, and the reason our brilliant founders put it there.
I'd guess in less than 5 years y'all will be begging to be our 51st state.

I have a totally different take on this law.

The UK has done very similar things and continues to do so. British PM Kier Starmer is probably worse than Trudeau in Canada. The EU has done very similar things and continues to do so. The US has done very similar things, but Trump is ending this sort of crap.

What I see is that this will devastate the people and the economy of Alberta, which is heavily dependent upon fossil fuels. Alberta is rich in fossil fuels and, from what I can tell, is one of the economic engines of the nation.

This is a "private members bill " introduced by a member of the NDP , on Feb 2024 , basically the ramblings of a left wing fruitcake, nothing more.

Well that would be good for Canada if that is all it turns out to be. Let's hope it fails bigly.
