Primer pump on Deere diesel?

New member
Hey guys,

I ran my snowcat out of diesel. :applause: Kind of an idiot I am sometimes I guess.

So, I put some more fuel into the tanks and I'm not seeing smoke when I turn the engine over. Checked the two fuel filters and they're both full of diesel.

Should I expect to see some kind of manual primer pump on this engine? I don't, but I'm looking carefully. Where might it be?

Thanks!

If you can't find the primer pump, loosen one of the fittings that connects to the injector. Have someone crank the engine while it is loose. All the air will come out in bubbles. After there are no bubbles, tighten the fitting. The main thing is to keep cranking while that fitting is loose. Don't completely disconnect the fitting, just loose.

Great advice. Just short of pulling the injector fittings I found the pump. After 20-30 strokes . . . . vroooooom!! I'm thankful to solve that little problem so I can move the machine out of the road again!

Thanks -

BoogieMan,

No price drop yet. We aren't desperate around here by any means. Is that you with the Thiokol hat on above?

Lucky for most potential buyers I have a friend who helps me along with snowcat troubles as they arise. This keeps me from wanting to bail out too early. At this stage I can see that I'll get to work on this machine all summer. Not many people buy these things in the summer when they can't use them for a while. But I think it's the best time to make a purchase. It takes several months to get totally familiar with a new [to you or me] machine.

Boggie, I had a question I thought you could answer. When you yank an engine from a Skidozer do you have to remove the whole darned cab? It's a medusa mess of hoses running through every hole available in the rear cab wall. Or, can you simply pull the engine out the back?

Well, we have removed them out the door before in the case of inline -6 most of the skidozer are built with the engine/transmissions bolted to a craddled subframe that sits inside the tub and can also be slid out the back.
when we do a rebuild we leave the engine in the craddle. hope that helps. if you are thinking about a cat rebuild it is best to start thinking we are 3-4 months out at this writing. :tiphat:

Ohhhh noooo. I'm not thinking of rebuilding my cat. The engine is perfect as far as I can see. I wouldn't wish that kind of rebuild on myself for any reason. I'd leave it up to the PROs in MN. I don't have the right kind of shop for big stuff - only little robotic parts.
