Presidents Day

Leni

Active member
I was eating lunch with my 10 year old grandson when his mom
asked him ...
"What is tomorrow?"

He said "It's President's Day"

She asked "What does that mean?" .... I was waiting for something
profound...

He said "President's Day is when Obama steps out of the White House
and
if he sees his shadow, we have 2 more years of unemployment."

I almost snorted my iced tea.

During Nixon's term there was a back-and-forth about whether Washington's or Lincoln's birthday should be the
February national holiday. Someone, lost to history, suggested combing the two and calling the new combination
Presidents' Day. The idea was never acted on, leaving Washington's Birthday as the official February holiday ... but
somehow, the public got the idea that the new name had been approved. Now, even some calendar companies
(and websites) are using the proposed-but-never-adopted combined name, but that doesn't make it right any more
than calling a magazine a clip makes it right!

FWIW, here is a list of the actual federal holidays for 2013 from OPM:

Tuesday, January 1 -- New Year's Day
Monday, January 21 -- Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 18 -- Washington's Birthday
Monday, May 27 -- Memorial Day
Thursday, July 4 -- Independence Day
Monday, September 2 -- Labor Day
Monday, October 14 -- Columbus Day
Monday, November 11 -- Veterans Day
Thursday, November 28 -- Thanksgiving Day
Wednesday, December 25 -- Christmas Day

OK....you win.......you do as you want.........next feb I will have pres day on the 18th and enjoy it!!!! and between now and then pray every day that O-slimmy is GONE.........and we dont have to pay his retirement!!!!!!

Heck if Government employees get more holidays off they won't be "working" ( I use the word loosely) at all. Hey that might not be such a bad thing!

Hey guys. I'm a retired State of California employee. I worked for the department for 34 years, unemployment and disability. Believe me we didn't want all of those holidays. We didn't ask for Martin Luther King Day or Caeser Chavez Day. The politicals bowed to political pressure and declared those holidays. We still have five days of work to do in four days. Since we issued checks that people depended on to pay the rent etc, the lobby would fill up and the phones went crazy. It was not a case of 'if it didn't get today there is tomorrow'. Believe it or not I had staff that did not take breaks and ate their lunch at their desk while processing checks. I understood what they were trying to do but they needed to take their breaks. I literally had to order them to go to the lunchroom.

The most useless holiday we had was Admission Day, Sept 9th. No one else was off. We worked the day after Thanksgiving. Talk about not being able to get anything done because everyone else was off. Couldn't get the info from doctors offices or employers that was needed to determine eligibilty. We finally were able to convince the powers that be to forget the 9th and give us the day after Thanksgiving. The following Monday was Hell and so was that entire week.

Yes, there are employees that didn't do what they should. Believe me I talked to them and wrote them up on it. Actually got a few of them fired. Not easy once they've passed probation.

Sorry Leni just teasing. I should only pick on the congressmen and those making the BIG bucks. Obviously there are a lot (police, fire, & military people are just some) of good hard workers for the various branches of the government. :flowers: So please accept my apologies.

Not really necessary. :flowers: Public employee bashing comes with the territory but it does irritate me once in a while. Part of the time I supervised customer service. There were times when people came into the office, demanded to talk to a supervisor, and then acted as if I was poishing my nails at my desk. Believe me, I was educated by experts on how to get what you want. Also what not to do.
