In an ideal world it wouldn't be necessary; for that matter, in an ideal world we wouldn't only have everyone performing voluntary community service to an abundance, but with world peace, military requirements would be somewhat diminished.

Back to reality, we need to be able to defend this country, even it that means a draft. Though, I still maintain anyone old enough get shot at, is old enough to enjoy Kentucky's finest.

I said "Maybe"; even during WWII, which has been billed as the great patriotic war and those who served called the Greatest Generatrion, they still had a draft to make sure everyone served. We're fotunate to have volunteer services now, but we should always be prepared in the event some incompetent leader comes along and starts an unpopular war; we may need the draft to get our buns out of the fire if recruitment falls off.

Voted DISAGREE, but I don't believe we need a draft under conditions when we are not in need of a draft. In essence, I belive that a draft is reasonable only when needed, but I didn't think "Maybe" was appropriate because in fact I a draft is reasonable, and a draft is legal.

I agree with you on the terminology and the reasoning. I chose to define "Maybe" as "It depends". That agrees with your explanation. I also ignored the fact that the draft is legal, and considered whether it was active or not. If it is never again implemented, it's effectively the same thing as abolishing it, without the political fall out.

I didn't vote in the poll because I have mixed feelings and am not really sure about what I think yet.
I've heard a lot of people say that we need to return to the draft. Most of the time it's related to the apparent lack of discipline or social values that those people believe military training will help to teach and instill in everyone who passes through the system. I've been through that system, but I really believe that my values and mores were established by my family before the army got me. But that might not apply to all???
And a draft, whether strictly military or inclusive of other civic services, must be completely inclusive if it is to be reinstated with my approval. No deferrals other than medical.
As far as the services are concerned, right now everyone who is there asked to be there. That type of person is much more receptive to training. BUT, if there was universal service that might not be a problem.
In that case, you have to start segregating the group by ability... Who can learn? Some will have to pick up trash, etc. or something that doesn't require a lot of grey matter. But if we're going to have a draft, everyone must do their part!

Don, honestly I thought that MAYBE could have been a very valid answer and I think both of us may beleive teh same thing but interpreted the terms differently. I certainly did not vote to make a military draft mandatory, I voted to allow for a military draft in the time of war, and to my way of thinking I had to vote DISAGREE because I disagree with the both statements presented in the first post ( Military service should be voluntary. There should be no draft. ) during times of extreme need (such as a world war).

My logic is that if I "disagree" under some circumstances, then I am forced to vote DISAGREE.

(Laughing) Bob, is the hair that you're splitting red, blond or brunette, and from where on the body does it come?

Don, I think most people who voted MAYBE or DISAGREE split the same hair, but came to different conclusions on how to vote their choice.
