Proudly Deplorable
Most of us, as a gift or bought as decoration, one way or another have one or more of these beautifulfowering plants for the Holidays.
And most likely they came with a decorative foil Bagget enclosing the pot.
And we watered them occasionally to keep them fresh for the holidays.
This is fine if you plan to throw them away. However, if you plan to keep them for a while here are some tips.
1) Toss the foil Baggett. It causes water to be retained and Poinsettias like a well-drained soil.
2) Never let them get dry, They will go into shock and seldom come back 100%
3) They hate to get a chill. So much so I never buy one and subject it to cold air getting it home. Put a bag over it when leaving the store or taking it as a gift to friends.
4) They love light but not direct sunlight for more than four hours. This especially with the red bracts blooming.
5) BTW, those red bracts are not the flower. The little yellow Rosset at the center of the bracts is the actual flower.
6) You can plant it outside even in northern climes after last frost. I always keep them potted so I can move them to the best places.
7) If they seem to suffer and lose leaves, one can cut them back and refresh new growth.
8) Propagation is easy. Cut off a branch and stick it in good soil kept wet.
I have often kept one going for years.
However, this year the extreme heat caught me off guard and I lost them.
So, this Christmas, I am starting over
I had this one for five seasons
Poinsettias are not easy house plants to nurture and grow. But can be worth the trouble.
Good luck to those who try.
