Gone But Not Forgotten
Pittsburgh wins Gawker.com ugliest accent tourney

The Associated PressUpdated: 10/20/2014 09:28:10 AM EDT

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburghers talk funny.
The city has "won" Gawker.com's ugliest accent tournament, besting the other finalist — Scranton — in a reader's poll with more than 54 percent of the vote.
The gossipy news site set up a tournament bracket pitting what it deemed the 16 ugliest city accents in the United States against one another.
Pittsburgh advanced to the finals by winning readers' votes over Atlanta, Philadelphia and Boston.
The Pittsburgh accent, an odd amalgam of southern twang and lazy East Coast diction — which turns downtown into "dahntahn" and you all into "yinz" — "worsted" Scranton by a vote of 10,404 to 8.748.

i luv my city's accent- & watching non-locals get puzzled when we speak. not quite an honor, -tho i' would not change how i talk.

I would have guessed that the Bronx borough accent, or the Boston accent would have won this award. Both are horrible to have to endure.

'a luvs/pals conversating & 'at-

'im'ma gonna get dahntahn & 'at. get me a pair a boots an at. yinz wanna chip-chop sammich & 'at, & at~ yinz wanna have cheese on 'em~ & i could get a few arns, an at, too. yinz gotta few fer 'at, an at. 'an they got those 1 kinda stuff. yinz know. yeah! chips & 'an 'at! i'll see yinz in a few.'
incomprehensible,- yeah. not to me, tho- that is how we speak.

i'm not yet upset. they're mad that we speak to where we simply confuse them. we're intelligent. we know how to function properly.

:yum::yum::yum: Keep telling yourself that. So far you're a party of one. More bizarre than the accent, is luvs ability to write in Pittsburgh-eze.

I just heard that yinz have exported Primani's to Erie, PA. The heart surgeons in Erie must need the business from the greasy food.:brows:

look into upmc. then giggle. they kept me here. & beyond once, joe. my my family is very grateful.

may seem a joke to u-
is a sheer blessing to us.
a sheer blessing to us; & he kept me here.

UPMC, iron workers, scholars, stillmills, (yeah, that is in my lingo),- yinz would not half 1/2 that stuff yinz have, sans us. so stfu or make it urself. :flowers::wink:

we talk. that's that. learn, or learn not.
a visitor better learn fast, or they'll be sans hotels & dinners; shows & shoppin'!

I've lived near the Burgh for over 20 years. Still can't pick up Pittsburgh-ese. I can understand some of it but can't speak it.

Sounds like Farmer Fran to me. Here's a 38 second video of him talking.

Just messing with you Aubrey.

Some words just took awhile to understand what you're talking about. E.g. "Buggy" which is everything from a shopping cart to a UTV.

Yep. They'll be forced to go where they speak English. As for all that the 'burg has to contribute, you can get all that and more in any steel town in the country ... And get it in English. Have a nice day.

Honestly, I've worked in the Burgh (Northside and Oakland which is pretty much downtown) for years. I'd say that 95% of the people speak perfectly normal. In 20+ years of living in the area, I could count the people I've known that actually speak Pittsburgh-ese on one hand.

hehe, bzoom. i know. joe, he called fer snow once again. once again, that was in november, yet we got snow in february. some years, near springtime.
bzoom; i was not aware that i spoke differently until cooking school. we took a linguistics class, as non-cooking relateds were required, too. then, i was told that 'we pickburgherz' speak differently' & not plain,- here- surrounding regions, too. most say they speak perfectly- fuk- i got that highest grade u can get on 1 high school state linguistists/English test- yet i'll confuse u into oblivion when i type/speak. promise.

Come to think of it.....I heard some of the same sort of talk when watching the news of the riots in fergerson Mo.....and the stlouis area.......while they were crying about how whity was a keepen them down!!!!me thinks maby som good english....some math and some manners might help the cause!!!
maby pits vill is in about the same boat!!!:whistling:

What goes around comes around. Put away your sexist card...it doesn't become you. Makes you look like a liberal democrat who cry foul when confronted with truth. Wa, wa, wa!!!

How did ugliest accent turn into ugliest thread?

This thread isn't going anywhere good.
