We have had several suicide attempts is the last few days. Seems like it is not limited to my area. Anyone else heard of suicides in their area recently? I saw this on the local news website:
Suicide Attempt Turns Into Hit-And-Run?
December 18, 2005
BELLEVUE - It was a startling scene in Bellevue Saturday evening after an 18-year-old jumped off a freeway overpass, landing onto I-405 below.
But police still aren't sure what exactly happened next. They say it might have been a public suicide attempt that turned into an accidental hit-and-run.
A witness driving across the NE 8th overpass told officers she saw the 18-year-old climb onto the guardrail, and then sit down facing outward.
The driver called 911, and a Bellevue police officer was just a half-block away.
But in the 30 seconds it took for that officer to get there, the teenager had already jumped down to the freeway below. The woman was badly injured, but originally survived the fall.
Yet investigators became puzzled when she was found further down the road than where she would have landed had she just simply jumped. They wonder if a car hit her on her way down.
"She left a coat and left a backpack and when she hit the pavement, that's close to a 35-, 40-foot drop," said Bellevue Police Officer Michael Chiu. "It's a significant drop; a little over three stories. Was she hit by a car then? We are trying to find out the circumstances. We don't know for sure."
Another possibility exists that she fell on top of a semi-truck/trailer combination and was carried a short distance before landing on the pavement.
Police are urging commercial drivers who were driving northbound on I-405 through the Bellevue area at about 6:45 pm Saturday night to closely inspect the tops of their vehicles and trailers. Damage may not be evident but minor fabric impressions, scuffs and smudges of road grime may be visible.
The woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, but died at the hospital Sunday morning. Meanwhile, Bellevue Police are asking any witnesses to give them a call.
