Pay college tuition with Credit Card ~ earn airline miles?

Can you pay college tuition with a credit card?

I'm thinking of paying my daughter's college tuition with a credit card to earn airline miles for free travel to/from college. I would pay off the balance each month so there would be no interest charge incured.

Anyone try this?

Are there better options? Perhaps pay with a credit card to earn cash back?

That has never been a question I've ever had to ask myself.

Way back when I was working, our company changed it's policy whereby they didn't pay for airline tickets directly. We had to pay for them on our personal card and then claim it back on expenses. There was more to it than that but it would take too long. At the time I was flying first class to West Africa and Egypt so I was racking up about $7000 a month for airline tickets. I used an American Airlines card and collected the air miles in addition to the actual flying miles for jaunts all over the place for us and our kids. Quite a few of the other guys used the Discover Card and got cash back.

So, if you can do either, it's a little bonus for you. Are you allowed to pay school tuition monthly or by semester?

Payment policies seem to depend on the school.

Wake Forest has a monthly payment plan that accepts credit cards, but charges a 2.7% fee. I'll have to double check the fee versus the airline mile benefits to see if it is worth it.

But . . . the lovely wife said: Just get some checks from the credit card company, write the check and make the payment that way, it will save the 2.7% and still earn the miles!

Interesting question . I would try to do it .

I tried topay for my 2006 King Ranch Ford truck with my credit card and the Car dealer ran backwards .LOL He told me no one had ever tried to do that and that he doubted it would clear the bank or his boss . I also wanted air miles and thought it was a great way to pick up 54000 miles .

I would give it a try !!!

Sounds like a great idea to me Melensdad. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

When my DD went off to college, she had a couple of friends (they were twins) whose dad bought a 4 bedroom house for his daughters to live in at college. They all played on the softball team together. He rented out the 2 other bedrooms to a couple of girls on the team. Their rent paid the mortgage and when they graduated from college, he sold the house for a profit. I don't know what the real estate market is like in the Winston-Salem area but I thought that was a pretty good idea.

I have always liked the idea of buying a house near campus, but many school require students to live on campus. Wake Forest requires it for the first 3 years. So buying and renting with intent to sell is not practical there.
