Passport + Driver's License are not proof of residency?

Took my daughter to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

She needs to get her "learners permit" to take drivers education.

Before going we gathered up the information we needed, at least what information was required according to the Indiana Driver's Manual. Had all the information. Thought we actually had more than required.

Left empty handed.

Yup, I could not prove that my daughter was a resident of Indiana. In fact I could not prove that I live in my house in Indiana. This despite the fact that I have a valid drivers license and a valid Passport. Turns out that those hard to duplicate government issued formed of identification don't carry any weight. Turns out that the BMV requires a couple of utility bills, phone bills or similar bills to prove that I actually live where my passport and my driver's license say I live. So here is a problem, the utility bills are in my wife's name, not mine!!! Guy at the BMV says I can't use those.

Seriously, why don't they consider a Passport for proof of residency?

I have a feeling that my daughter will never get her driver's license :furious:

When you take your utility bills in I think under the new programs they want to pay them for you. :whistling:

I had a problem changing my Florida License to Kentucky. I had my current Florida Driver's license which had my social security number on it. I had my SS card as well as proof of residency. Well it seems when I got my SS card at 16 years old, my parents laminated though is clearly says on the back not too. Well I have used that same card to get drivers licenses in Louisiana, Florida and Texas over the years as well as countless jobs and never had a problem. Kentucky said no and wanted proof of it being my number which I pointed out was also on the Florida license, still no good so home I came. I started looking for some old records and found a 20 year old pay check stub with it on there as well as my name. Went back and they accepted that go figure. Needless to say I've gotten a new SS card as I sure didn't want to go through that again in the future.

Now my wife got hers about a week before me with no problem except one we didn't notice until she went to buy something that required a picture ID. The sales clerk notice the year of her birth which was 1800 in stead of 1900. Well my wife didn't think about it until it came time to renew it and she mentioned it to the person at the BMV who said they couldn't change it leaving her birth year as 18xx. Well a month later we get a letter from the capital saying due to an obvious error she would have to take proof of her birth date and pay to replace the license. She went down and raised the roof and it turns out one of the women in the office keeps copies of old DL and found my wife's. They admitted it was their mistake and reissued the license with out cost. They have their rules but no common sense sometimes.

Standard practice. Most places need proof of current residency.

My drivers license has an address I have not lived at for 15 years...

I don't think its really any of their business.

What is disconcerting is, the banks know your new address even if

you don't tell them. I opened up a P.O. box (my mailing address) and

got my statement from the bank without telling them what the address was.

All I can figure is that the Post Office supplied it.

It is illegal in every state I've lived but one thing you must have is a picture ID not always a license to rent from me. I would guess that 4 out of 10 when asked it the address correct on you drivers license they say no. It doesn't matter to us really as all we want is the number and picture for ID purposes on the phone.

My military ID had expired last month and I hadn't realized it. Going through the gate at Redstone Arsenal I showed them the ID. It was confiscated because it had expired. I was able to get in with my NASA ID. The nice guard did give me receipt for my ID so I could get a new one. The following week I went to the ID card section and was told I would need 2 forms of ID. I pulled out my drivers license and my NASA ID. My federal government, looks just like my military ID badge. The lady said she couldn't accept that. She said she could accept a voter registration card or a county pistol permit. Is that crazy or what? I remembered the receipt for my ID and that worked. Usually NASA has those kind of stupid policies.

Hopefully you know the address of your own rentals.

Not always as they some times fall off the planet. As long as the sign the rental agreement with proof of who they are not a problem as once they have gone to long without paying we auction their contents off to the highest bidder.

New York will take 2 credit cards with your name on them as 2out of 4 points of I D. But not a valid Pa. CCW permit or photo CDL license. They will also take a property tax bill or utility bill. Too damn stupid if you ask me.

A passport is proof of citizenship, not residency. United States passports don't even have an address on them (at least mine doesn't from about 10 years ago).

I've had a bunch of passports through the years and none had really much information especially my residence.

Mine has addresses, both my US and UK passports.

The US one says Indiana USA

When I became a US citizen they took my British passport and cut off the bottom right hand corner. I thought that a bit "off" really as the passport is the property of the British Government but I don't think that it's likely to cause an international incident.

In the US you don't have to relinquish citizenship to another country. It is "frowned upon" but they can't make you do it. Canada requires you to submit a specific form in order to relinquish citizenship. So even if the US defaces your UK passport there is nothing stopping you from getting another one.
