This is kind of the same thing that happened to Melensdad. My parents were gone for two weeks with the motorhome and new boat for a fishing trip. They got back home last night and something didn't look quite right as they walked around the house after about an hour of being home.
The doors were locked when they got there. No signs of forced entry. No dirty footprints all over the floor. No broken windows. Nothing.
As they unpacked and started to relax, dad noticed an old cufflink of my grandfathers lying on the floor. He opened up his dresser drawer and all the jewellery he had from my grandfather was gone. They looked in moms jewellery box and allot of her jewellery was missing. Dad went downstairs and noticed that his gun cabinet had been pried open but no guns were missing. An old double edged curved knife with a wooden case from my grandfather was missing though. Six beer were taken from the fridge. Dad's new laptop was still sitting there along with his 60" flatscreen. Nothing else taken or damaged downstairs.
Dad goes out to the garage and tries the electric door opener. It's not working. He goes in and finds that someone had moved his motorcycle back a couple feet, went into the saddlebag, took everything out but didn't take anything. The lights in the garage weren't working either. Someone shut the breakers off for the garage. I'm guessing to disable the security lights on the garage door. The window on the garage wasn't broken but pried open. Dad's got thousands of dollars in tools in there but nothing was missing. He went out behind the garage and found the screen door on his tarped shelter open. Someone got into the storage compartments on his atv, took the gun rack off, took the key, but didn't take anything else. Dad goes to get in his truck and finds that someone had been through the center console in the truck but didn't take anything but a handfull of loose change. They left his portable gps. There was no sign of forced entry to the truck either. They took the keys from the keyrack in the house, unlocked the truck, riffled through it, locked it back up, then put the keys back.
Dad went to look at his old boat. The fish finder was carefully removed along with the cables and transducer which was attached to the boat. All told, they figure about $10,000 in total was stolen.
No signs of the locks being tampered with to the house. Totally weird. They just built the house last summer. The guys building the house were the only ones with a key as they were still working on it up until a few months ago. I have my suspicions that it was an inside job as they are kind of shady characters to start with.
The locks are already changed. A security system is being installed.
