Paint thiokol

Hey guys I am also wondering where to get paint, what type should be used with the aluminum, and does anyone have a paint code? Any help would be appreciated.

look into the aircraft refinnishing places for suggestions as to what primer to use and immaron or polyurathane are the prefered top coats on aircraft aluminum is tricky but if you get your primer right it will stick for ever on my snow trac i just used alkalyd enamal with the intention of a new coat of color every few years as my rig takes a lot of abuse in teh willows

Go to the Snowcat Modification & Projects page, then go to page four, then scroll down till you find THIOKOL 601 RESTORE. Then starting on page four of that post, I start to explain the painting process of my Thiokol. As far as I know, there is no paint code, just the color name.
I hope this will help you.

if the paint code you are looking for is for the airforce blue just ask your napa store for strata blue if they serve the local airforce base they will know what strata blue is also you are looking for the old solid color not the new metal flake strata blue the airforce has changed to your other option is tstrip the aluminum and polish it like an airplane it will look chromed

Thanks Guys that a big help, my next question is does anyone have a stripper or method to remove the paint that they recommend? I have been told in the past that you dont want to sand blast aluminum so I am looking for other options. Also I am thinking that I would like to paint it orange again.

aviation paint stripper would be my choice also blasting with wallnut shells or plastic bead in the lower 48 you may also fing some one who can dry ice blast it if you use thw stripper method use a steam cleaner to wash the rig before you start body work that stripper can stay in cracks and gaps for ever

After considering the different options of paint removal, I opted to go with soda blasting. It worked excellent. I then used a "rubber" sanding disc to to lightly rough up the aluminum surface before primer.

I used Imron two part epoxy primer. I feel most, if not all, two part primers will perform just as well. I then wet sanded the primer, then sprayed the two part Imron color, then wet sanded that to repair any/all imperfections, then sprayed the color a second time.
