Overweight Ford F-750 Plunges Through Historic Wooden Bridge in Maine

Doh!

More at the link:

Once upon a time, Maine could claim that more than 120 covered bridges dotted its landscape. Last week, the headcount was eight. Now, there are seven and a half. That’s because, despite posted signs, the driver of an overweight vehicle decided to cross one. He didn’t make it. Not even halfway. Instead, the bridge bottomed out, sending the driver, truck, and cargo plummeting into the water below.

Babb’s Bridge in Gorham, Maine, has the oldest history of the state’s remaining covered bridges, one that dates back to 1840. The wooden bridge also has a weight limit of three tons. The driver behind the wheel of a Ford F-750 thought he could make it, but alas—those trucks can be over 9,000 pounds empty, and depending on what was in the bed, GVWR can be between 26,000 and 37,000 pounds.

Oh, and the driver was also hauling crushed gravel, according to the Gorham Police Department. Even if the vehicle were an older F-Series with zero cargo, its weight would’ve still exceeded what the little old bridge could handle. The ability to read doesn’t necessarily mean you understand the words. At least, that’s my guess when the driver didn’t change his route

What a freaking idiot.

I hate it when this sort of stuff happens.

There is a small covered bridge in one of the northwest suburbs of Chicagoland that has low clearance, idiots in extended top vans and u-haul box size trucks hit it every year. I mean seriously, WTF?

You would freak out at the overloaded trucks, trailers, and cars at Burning Man. What a shit show. So many vehicles with their headlights pointing up at 45 degrees. Shit strapped on with ropes. It's scary and funny all at the same time.

I googled around a bit but couldn't find anything good. I think next year I´m going to start some form of social media page about the overloaded vehicles of Burning Man. Since I was involved in the setup I had a special pass that let me leave and re-enter. I still had to wait in line when it was busy but I did four trips in and out this year. So much opportunity to get good content. I might even just ride my bike out during the busy times and take pictures. It's truly amazing that some people even make it out of their driveways.

Im guilty of exploiting bridges in the northeast.

i have driven hours to go around some. Ive argued to cross others. Zoom in on this fine ct bridge.

There was no deck.

I argued to cross it. Signed a waiver, and lived to tell about it.

6k is light. He should have put helium in his tires
