Overheated SV200

snowbird

New member
I just got back from my first try at snowmobile trail grooming with my SV200 and just as I pulled into my yard it boiled over. I opened the cover over the radiator cap and discovered the cap was loose. I worked the engine pretty hard so maybe the cap being loose let it overheat? (I had the radiator boiled out when I restored the 1973 Bombardier).

you may have other problems like a stuck thermostat but start with the raidator cap as the job of the pressure cap is to rais the boiling point of your coolant

A missing thermostat will also cause an engine to boil over when you shut it down or let it idle after working it---the water travels too fast through the block not thoroughly cooling the metal then when you shut it down the water stops and it boils over.

the effect of the cap can vary the boiling point by several degrees

here is a good article that tells you the different boiling points based on antifreeze % and temp.
Good luck

Thanks for the hints. I checked the cap after the radiator cooled down and it was just the top part that was loose, but I vaguely remember my radiator didn't have an original cap and I'm not sure this auto supply replacement fits correctly. I think I'll try to find a Ford cap to make sure it's seating correctly against the neck to create the pressure.
