There is a grooming website that has a "scrapbook" full of photos that show guys who are having really bad days! :pat: There are lots more photos on the website that I didn't post. If you have any that you'd like to add to this thread, please do!

Thought you folks may not have seen it so I'm posting a link and some of the photos for your consideration. Maybe one of these will help you out when you screw up something and your better half says "I TOLD YOU SO. . . "

Yes it is taken <1980> on the Vatnajökull glacier.

Re: BAD DAY PHOTOS: Tractors, Snowcats & Equipment?

Here's a couple more, these were taken at the War and Peace Show at Beltring in Kent, the tank in the pictures was one that was giving people rides!! They had to get them off and then try to get the tank out, great fun was had by all, but it was succesful in the end and it was running again next day.

Re: BAD DAY PHOTOS: Tractors, Snowcats & Equipment?

I thought this was a good one :yum:

I know there is a story here, I just don't know what it is, and I really wonder how much grief that guy is going to be in for using his wife :confused2: to balance that tractor.

Oooops

Here are a couple of photos I ran across in my computer We sold a New hydrostatic Machine to company that does sraying under powerline right of ways and they were more used the the controlled differential type machines. and it was a newer operator well four times over the course of 2 months they managed to get it stuck pretty good this was the worst I would say what made it bad was the powerline companies do depth soundings of the depth of all swamps they had to cross this one had a depth sounding of 175 feet
basicly no firm bottom for a long ways. We had a 60,000 pound winch on the machine we went ot extract them with and we had to double line it to get them out and had to tie onto another machine turned sideways as it turned out they were wedged between two underwater stumps and they were being pulled with. we had to dive down to hook on.

Re: Oooops

I snapped this one yesterday. That is my neighbor and his Jeep CJ stuck. The tow strap is leading to the back of my Snow Trac. But the effort was pointless, the Jeep is stuck on its transfer case, the left side wheels are spinning in slush and unable to touch the bottom of the small creeklet that they are in. The wheels on the right are spinning freely in the snow unable to make contact with solid ground. I think a root snagged the transmission or transfer case under the Jeep. We couldn't even rock it, it will take a winch, some jacks, and some effort to free, or maybe a tractor with backhoe.

This thing must be pretty well snagged on something. In these conditions a Snow Trac would normally have no problem pulling this jeep out. I've pulled my One Ton, Dually Diesel 4X4 ramp deck snowcat hauler with a trailer out of worse messes, more than once. Try putting a 'High Lift' or 'Handyman' Jack under one corner and raising it up, then tow it out.

Lyndon, I asked him if he had a High Lift jack, but he does not. Nor do I.

I was sitting in about a foot of snow and I simply spun the tracks and moved all the snow so that I was then spinning up dirt and grass. And no, I did not dump the clutch to get the tracks spinning. I was in 1st and started out very slow, but neither the Snow Trac, nor the Jeep even budged.

I'm sure I could get the front loader of a tractor under the left side of the Jeep to lift it, but honestly I don't think a tractor could get to that spot without getting stuck.

Bob - you can get a cheap farm jack (Hi-Lift knock-off) at HF for around $30-$40. I've had mine for years and it is one of those tools that can be very handy at times. It's one of those "must have" tools. I have it mounted inside the bed of my truck.

You could get a nice brand-name one and mount it on your snow trac on the roof or side rails. It may save your bacon some day.

I would also suggest a very stout chain in place of the strap. I don't like straps since they have a habit of snapping a lot faster than a chain.

PS.... my favorite picture is of a Snow cat that ran out of gas on another thread... :yum: :yum: :yum:

I used to extricate myself from that kind of stuck by putting the Hi-Lift jack under the trailer hitch, jacking it to the top, and pushing the Willys Wagon sideways so it dropped down onto fresh ground. 5 minutes and out. 10 minutes if I had to do the front end as well. Don't forget the chunk of plywood for a jack base.

Yo don't want to apply brute force with a chain or strap. Sooner or later that will rip something off. Better to lift it up off the obstacle. A tug from another vehicle can help on slippery ground, but not when you are impaled on an immovable object.

IMHO you need better straps... or your chain is a lot heavier than I would want to lug around. I switched to straps years ago and have not failed one yet that was in decent condition.

Eric

Ha Ha Ha, everyone make fun of Bob. :gay: I'm a real sensative guy you know! Hey, at least I was man enough to admit my idiocy of not watching my fuel gauge. And on top of that, I was willing to submit myself to public ridicule (as if I don't get enough of that from BigAl) by posting the photos.

As for the strap -vs- chain issue, you guys can fight over that. That is my tractor strap used for lifting trees and shrubs that I transplant. It just happens to be an old tow strap that I would not really trust for 1/2 its original 10,000# rating. But it is what I had easy access to when my neighbor called. He also had a chain and we tried that when I attempted to pull him forward. Obviously neither one worked.

Put a winch on the Snow Cat, and then some good chain hooks on the front of the Snow Cat. Chain the front to a tree, and winch the Jeep out of its place. If you see the tree bending, and the Jeep staying put, then tell him to call a big wrecker to pull it out. Do you remember the story of the straps used as binders on TBN, and what happened? A strap is fine for pulling a rolling object, but not pulling a stuck object. It is like using a bungee cord.... :yum:
