Okay. The first picture and what appears to be the rest of the Thiokol machines have the drive axle elevated.

Wouldn't the design advantage go to elevating the drive sprockets for both ride quality and durability?

Indeed... a Civilian. Doing what I can to expand the shrine of ye old Thiokols where they can be worshiped, praised, and pampered...and used. I think this one will get a frame-off to original. As usual, finding such nuggets does not go without assistance... in this instance a good bud hooking up the mainer.
