Oc4 fluid fill

This will probably sound like a silly question but I just got to thinking is there two seep rate fill ports on the oc4? I filled mine at the filler above gearbox. I pulled plug under brake section to make sure it had oil and it did. My diff only has one plug on side to check level. Just want to make sure I have got it filled correctly.

Thanks
Anthony

I think I fill through the top hole above the diff and let it flow internally into the transmission and find its level to the plug that's drivers side gearbox. Can't see why doing the opposite would matter.

I would agree with above info...

When I filled it up on 1402, I just used one of the top holes, and used the "specified" amount per Pats recommendations with SpryteImpovement, and called it good.

What fluid is the replacement for the conoco DN

Where did you source it.

What is the specified amount Dr. pat reccomends. Does it differ from the manual.?

Just curious.

I get my fluids of that type from local OIL supplier, and Pats recommendations were pretty much out of the manual

I went with AMSoil 'power shift' in 50 weight. Synthetic fluid, GL1 spec (that's important due to brass, or maybe it was bronze seals)

Stupid expensive.. but made for brake steer machines.

You could also use aeroshell 50 weight, non detergent oil.. A local airport could get it for you.

got some aero shell 100 50 weight coming.

is it 5 gallons plus or are we talking 2 gallons?

My manual and the one at the repository says drain and fill.

Not sure how much to order.

I dont recall exactly, but there is the rear end part & the manual gear box part where fluid gotta be as well.

I believe they are joined via couple of opening in the mid-wall section, but I think my total fill took almost 5 gal on the 1402

Pulled out my notes from my last 1202A (OC4) oil change - 9 1/2 quarts of Aero Shell 100 went into the fully drained rear. I also used 2 cups of 80 or 90 gear lube in the drop boxes.

Nikson - did you have an OC-4 or an OC-12? If an OC-12, did it have a tranny radiator?

Just an observation.

The seals separating the drop boxes from the center case are leaky even when new. The center case oil will leak into the drop boxes and some will eventually get back into the center case (where the brake bands live and work).

I heartily recommend using the same oil in all the cases and watch that the level in the center case dose not drop too low due to seeping past the seals into the drop box cases, which will slowly fill up with oil from the center case.

We still use Cat TO-4 50W for all OC-4 applications.

Pat - The manual I have for 1200's (serial # beyond 1447), which I think are all OC12, recommends just what you said. Yeah - you don't want gear lube in the main section.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I have never seen the oil level in my drop boxes change in 10 years. Given this and how the axial and gears sit in the drop boxes, I'm not sure how any appreciable amount of gear lube could work its way into the my OC4 tranny without the level changing. As gear lube is meant for applications where the gears see high stresses at their engagement points and regular oil does not provide the same lubrication/protection, I really would like to use the right stuff in the right places. If someone has the lubrication recommendations for 1200A's (OC4) could you tell use what Thiokol recommends to use in the drop boxes.
