OC-4 Oil Specs

Boat Doc

New member
Hi...forum newbie here...I have a 1965(?) Spryte 1200 with OC-4 transaxle...have been told both 50W oil and also 10W hydraulic oil are required in the gearbox...just took the rotten wood deck off today and someone has written in paint pen on top of the gearbox "50W Only"...just want to be sure, what is the correct oil for the transaxle? I am in NH and this will be used only in winter temperatures...

Also, is there a source to buy a 1200 manual? I've found a couple 1200C on-line, but not a 1200?

Thanks!

The great debate has surfaced again…..
I personally like HD Universal Tractor Hydraulic Fluid. NAPA #85-405. I like this because I can get it just about everywhere I go. And it works really well and is inexpensive.

Other people seem to like:

John Deere transynd
Caterpillar TO-4

I can also scan a 1200 manual if you aren’t able to find one. Email me if a manual is still needed.

I've rebuilt too many of these to recommend anything other than SAE 50 weight transmission oil. (SAE 30 weight if its below 0 degrees F ambient) in the OC4, drop boxes too. The wear on the ring and pinion is severe in these.
Just my opinion, use what brand you want, I'll stick with Cat TO-4

The 1200 Spryte manuals are broken down by serial number ranges: 95-462, 464-722, 744-968, ..., 1447 and on. Whats your serial number?

That makes sense as I seem to keep finding pieces of manuals that do not all appear to be from the same document...my serial # is 264...Thanks

My 1402 has the same transmission/axle but without drop boxes. The manual says "Above 0° F SAE 50 wt engine oil, heavy duty". (Below 0° SAE 30) The best source for that is aircraft engine break in oil. If that is not available the book says you can use "SAE 90 straight mineral gear lube, parafin base, inhibited." My cat had T 04 in it when I bought it. I switched to 50 wt mineral 9 years ago with no issues. It seems to be more responsive in steering. I don't have to pull the levers as hard. Of course my cat is much smaller with only 30 hp. Typical operating temps for us are 5 - 35° F. The main thing is to only use a GL1 type oil (no high pressure additives or sufides). The phosphate additives will corrode the bronze bearings in the gearbox. In other words, if it stinks like sulfur, don't use it.
