Yup, the big announcement by President Obama to students will amount to an average savings of about $6 per month reduction in their payments according to liberal leaning ATLANTIC MAGAZINE which took the time to run the numbers.

The numbers were run by an economics correspondent today in The Atlantic magazine. And It turns out what he is offering the students is between $4.50 and $7.70 a month of relief."

Yup. About $6 bucks. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/vi...a_wouldve_been_laughed_out_of_auditorium.html

That is more than what I received, I paid my school loans off in full. The only difference between now and then is inflation. Salaries are a lot higher now then way back when, so is tuition, it all balances out. People have to learn to budget. I also worked full time while going to college.

Actually, no. Tuition is about 2x inflation over any 17 year period.

Just comparing the college I went to, the same one my son now goes to. Tuition is about four times what I paid. Starting salaries are up about the same around here.

True, and its been growing faster since the government really started to focus on sending more kids to college instead of trade schools and other vocations and since the availability of government backed loans.

Colleges have dramatically changed since the 1970's when I was in school. Kids now get maid service in their dorms, they get to pick between on campus restaurants instead of getting the slop we got at the common dining hall and/or fraternity house, etc. With colleges now doing more to compete for the smart kids, they are dramatically ramping up the amenities they offer to attract the kids to campus. All of that costs a lot more money.

Perhaps a whole different discussion, but I honestly think we send too many kids to college, not enough to vocational and other specialty schools that actually teach skills.

As does the sports facilities and parking and on and on. I am not sure if the cost for food has increased as quickly as the quality, if I had to bet I would bet it has increased net profit for the school.

One place the money is not going is to teachers.

What are dorms? I paid $35 a month for a two room apartment with a shared bathroom. Sometimes I had to pay for gas with dimes that I had saved up. The problem is that the kids are spoiled now, want all of the extras. The only dining room that I had was what I cooked.

I had it better than my older brother who joined the fire department for a place to sleep and scrubbed floors in a restaurant for his meals.

The only silver fork that we had growing up had a long handle on it and was used to pitch hay to the cows or to clean up the manure after them.

It's not the kids, kids are just like they have always been. They make due with what we give them. I think the problem is schools administration. Constantly building anything, sports facilties, dorms, lecture halls etc, even when enrollments are flat or declining. No, I dont beleive it is the kids.

Based on what I paid when I started College and what we just forked over for my sons first semester I am seeing an average rate of increase of a little over 9% for the last 33 years. Crap I am old.

The real culprit is once again the Government and the f*&cking banks. College tuition is just another bubble that they have blown via grants and cheap government backed loans that were given to pretty much any homosapien who could breath. This overloaded a fixed resource with skyrocketing demand; and the price went up. All the foolish overspending and corruption naturally followed the money.

Shouldn't the parents assume some (if not all) of the responsibility in the way these so called "freeloader kids" were raised, and being so dependent on others for support?

I think the gist of this thread is to point out the arrogance of the Obama administration.

Once upon a time, a new prospective student had a number of institutions to "shop" for the best education financing. No more. Buried deep within the ObamaCare Bill (of all places) the Obama administration took control over all student loans. No more can you finance thru the banks, but must go directly to the government.

They say this was necessary to save any fees that the banks may have collected along the way. But if you believe that, then you deserve to become one of the sheeple that are beholding to your government and can watch as the costs of education rise and the grip of government grows tighter and tighter around your furry little neck.

Why was it necessary to hide this legislation deep within ObamaCare, forbidden to go to the House floor for debate? For anyone concerned, it is way too late to be asking that question. One day you will be so grateful to your government that you won't mind at all when your liberal coursework is designated and the terms of your government service upon graduation will be cheerfully fulfilled.

In the meantime, just be grateful for the six bucks.
.

The cost of education should not outstrip inflation ever year, textbooks shoudl not be 500 bucks, students should not be charged a sports fee and on and on. Yes, studnets and parents should be responsible for tuition, but schools should be more affordable. Freeloader kids? How would you suggest they pay for education? The federal governtment paid for mine or I woudl not have been able to go.

Actually, eduaction has been crazy expensive long before Obama care. :whistling:

Actually, I never suggested education hasn't been expensive pre-ObamaCare. Nor has ObamaCare anything to do with it. Is that the only thing you mistakenly cheery-picked from my post? ... or just usual deflection? Care to speak to what I am really suggesting?

"Freeloader kids" is a nice term I use for what most have been using for some of the OWS protestors.

Your last sentence makes my point and answers your own question. My parents payed for my 3 siblings college tuition , when it came to me they couldn't afford to send me nor did I want to go. I never finished grade school and I chose to work instead of being a life long student or dependent on others .
But yet even though our kid is grown up and we payed for his education we still have to pay for others educations.

So tell me again why you mentioned Obamacare so many times. No, nevermind dont. And where do you guys get the arrogance? The guy is president.

I am sure you are all great Americans, but mine was paid for by military service. As for quiting in grade school so other did not have to pay for you, well I just never thought of that.

OK. Let's make this real simple. Tell me why the student loan take-over was suddenly and discretely buried deep within ObamaCare, in the middle of the final night of so-called "reconciliation", and not accessible for floor debate in the House?

Hint: It has absolutely nothing at all to do with ObamaCare.

PS: just who are "you guys", and why do you so blindly accept everything that "the guy [that] is president" does?

.

Go ahead and explain it, I am kinda slow.

so, Questioning the president, his motives and actions is arrogance???

wow, that sounds like someone who drinketh the messiah Barrys' koolaid.

it's my RIGHT as an american to be able to speak out in public my opinion of the govt. and not suffer any reprocussions.

Pretty typical of a liberal to call someone arrogant for exercising their rights .:hammer:

No, someone called him arrogant, I asked why. What part dont you get?

Just to make myself clear Mak, I think its good that those in the military receive help for education, medical and deserve far more then what they do get.

This is as slow as I can go. I was refering to the bolded part. Can you throw in a little substance? At least if you are just going to be argumenative, say something.

sorry you're not keeping up, besides, anytime "healthcare" comes up you put your fingers in your ears and your progressive blinders on. I'm wasteing photons explaining it.
