Nobody's buying Christmas trees!

Yup. Government jumps in to help.

They slap on a 15-cent tax and then use the money to pay for public relations campaigns to promote the use of natural trees.

WTF!?!

Spending 15 cents per tree for promotion is a probably a good idea. Filtering it through the government probably not.
3 cents will to promotion, 12 to making sure every poor person gets one free.

Why are they promoting Christmas trees when we are not supposed to use the word Christmas any more?

Bob

This trend of subsidizing businesses has to stop. A successful free enterprise system depends on a variety of components of which include:
  • A competitive product that evolves throughout its normal life cycle
  • Competitive pricing
  • Good service and/or support
  • Good management team
When a business lacks these characteristics, either through mismanagement or because the usefulness of the product has reached the end of its cycle, they close their doors. An example of this evolutionary process is the slide rule. A valuable tool at one time, but one that became outdated technology with the advent of the calculator.

In a strong “free enterprise environment”, the slid rule companies would either have invested in another technology (i.e. the electronic calculator) and continued to exist or they would have pissed off their money on big bonuses and self-rewards and found themselves out of business. Either way, the process was one of natural progression and the system remains healthy.

In today’s atmosphere I wouldn’t be surprised to find the slide rule manufactures being subsidized and still in business. (i.e. Amtrak, GM, Etc.) Because failure isn’t an option any longer, the growth of new technologies diminishes, your tax donations continue to increase and the general economic health of our country becomes anemic.

This rant obviously has less to do with the Christmas tree business and more to do with my feelings on government intervention and the misguided belief that distributing my income and manipulating the mechanics of the tree (free) enterprise system is a good idea.

One thing it will acomplish if their plan works to get more folks to use a real tree , is the amount of homes that will be burnt to the ground during the Christmas season due to the idiots that dont have enough common sense to know how to tend to a live tree.

That along with the ones that dont burn their houses down will be disguarding there trees after the fact in the rural ditches all over America. :glare:

Sorry for the added rant, but the whole idea of it sucks IMO .

For the same reason that you cannot say negro unless you want to send one to college, or colored people unless you want to advance one.

So let me get this straight. The official unemployment rate is 9%. The actual one is 16%. We are spending 4 Billion Dollars a day more than we take in. This country right now is in trouble. So what does our esteemed Idiot-In-chief concern himself with?

Let me guess. Improving the image of Christmas trees by imposing a new tax on them. Un-Friggin'-Believable!

This guy so has to go away it is not even funny. :w00t2::w00t2::w00t2:

I am a fan of real Christmas and Real Christmas trees. We always have a real one in our house. Often with the root ball attached.

That said, I cannot truck this. It is entirely possible that the buying public has a reason to purchase artificial trees. Fire hazard being one of them.

Economics may be another. But then being economicaly responsible is something no government has to do. They can always just collect another tax.

Question:
Is there any industry our government will not attempt to control and manage? None are safe if the government wants to create the corporatist state. Knocking out the small guys to favor the big ones , government in bed with Wall Street, forcing Americans to buy products under penalty of law....
Welcome to the United Socialist America

Are you guys really ready for this?
It happens with small steps and this is one of them.

Let the Christmas tree growers collect and spend their own money.
Let the small Farmers grow hay and feed their cattle
Let the big guys suffer under the same competitive laws of free market enterprise as the small upstarts.

Otherwise, we do not ever get back from here. And for sure, as Squerly postulated, we don't go forward.

BTW I'll be doing a blue spruce this year.

I haven't had a tree in years....with that said, it is pretty ridiculous how the gov't is assisting all these industries yet they aren't focused on improving crap that matters like the education system which needs a major overhaul ASAP before we have even more clueless people being sent to run the world.

I am not having a tree, real or fake this year.
The fake one stands in the master bedroom closet, covered.
I'll simply do what I did last year and light a few candles, and trim the cupboards above my kitchen bar with lights.

Don't need a tree to get me in 'the spirit' anyway.

Well I got mine up. Took a lot of time but it is done. Can some please help me keep Rusty away from it though.
