No, I'm not gone; just a little busy...

Dargo

Like a bad penny...
Not looking for any sympathy, just an explanation.

A couple of months ago we had an ice storm that kept us without power for a week or so. When the power came back on I discovered that we suffered a HUGE power surge that took out about half of the things in my home that were plugged in. You can imagine how long that list is. It was only then that I discovered that State Farm has decided that no one item in a home that is plugged in is worth over $1000. That hurt.

Fortunately I have a couple of generators and we were only inconvenienced and not in trouble. I spent a lot of time with on my tractor clearing snow, ice and trees for others. I didn't feel well after a few 16 hour days of doing so but figured that was normal. Soon I felt much worse and was diagnosed with pneumonia. That kept me down for a bit and I didn't even feel like getting online.

Right after that I had to run 90 miles an hour with my hair on fire trying to catch up with some work issues. This last weekend I was nearly caught up when I decided that my wife had been sick for too long and insisted she go to the hospital. Monday they operated on her for a ruptured appendix. She is still in the hospital and will be 'for a while', according to the physicians who are attending her and trying to get her internal infections under control.

In the mean time I'm trying to run my businesses, keep up with getting my kids everywhere they need to go and stay at the hospital as much as possible. Of course, I had several hundred trees arrive Monday that I'd ordered last fall. I intend to plant them in my spare time.

Anyway, I'm not intentionally staying away from here, I'm just a little busy right now. I didn't want anyone to take my very limited posting as any sign of dissatisfaction or as any statement.

Geez Brent, I knew your wife wasn't feeling well, but all that other stuff, and then your wife going from sick to surgery sort of caught me off guard.

I'm going to have to check my stuff, I've got State Farm too. I know a couple things plugged in cost over $1000.

Just curious, do you have your electronic gear plugged into UPS systems with surge protection? I've got my TVs running through UPS systems, not so because I want to run the TV for a few minutes after the power fails but rather because they are supposed to do a better job at protecting from surges/spikes/lows etc. That is my THEORY anyway. So I don't use those little surge protectors, I use the full battery back up systems. Typically the 500 watt systems from APC.

Well Brent, there is no doubt that your plate runneth over. Chin up, head down and keep those feet moving. (Wow, thats gotta look pretty funny)..

Anyway, they say God never gives us more than we can handle although I have to say he certainly pushes the envelope sometimes. Prayers for the wife and a speedy return home and for you for the extra set of hands you could undoubtedly use.

Dang Brent, been a crazy winter for you. Here's to a quick recovery for your wife and no other setbacks for your family.

After the ordeal with State Farms car insurance a year or so ago I was surprised to read that you still have them for home insurance. But, I can't suggest a better company. I have Grange and had major hail damage a year and a half ago. They ended up paying for 20k in repairs and then proceeded to say they did not want to renew me. I contacted them to find out why, and was told that the agent who inspected my property for the hail damage noticed that I did not have a handrail on the stairs of my back deck. I said that can be taken care of very easily, and I did not want to go insurance shopping ....so they agreed not to drop me. As I understand it since I had not been with them long (I switched to them because my daughter was working in the field, so it was in support of her) but since I had not been with them long and had already had a big payout they knew they would never make money on me so they'd rather cut the cord now. Insurance companies are slimy.

Anyway, hope to see you back active on here soon. All the best.
Cheers.

I should have mentioned this; the only true 'electronic' items that survived were the ones plugged into an APC brand of surge protector/battery backup. All other surge protectors failed. Oh, and their million dollar guarantees...fuggidaboutit. It seems that if you have a power surge that is strong enough to go through their equipment, they don't pay. I only made 1 call on a Belkin model, but realized then that it was a waste of time. The computer company I had come in and the electronics company I called for my TV's and Nautilus equipment echoed the APC is the only thing that works mantra. The large APC units are extremely expensive, but I suppose you get what you pay for. My large HD flat panel over the fireplace is getting one because it was many times more than what State Farm would pay to replace. And, yes, if you have State Farm you better check with your agent. Anything plugged in has a $1000 cap. Two of my 4 A/C units that got toasted weren't included in the $1000 cap because they were directly wired to the house and are different.

Brent, best wishes to you and your family. Hope the wife has a speedy recovery. As for the rest of the stuff, it is easy for me to say it can all wait, but if you are like me, it is best to keep busy in times like theses.

bummer about your past few months - good luck with everything.
As to the insurance - you might check with them about specific riders for replacement cost on items worth more than $1k. Most insurance companies will do this for additional $$$ per year per $1k in added value per item, which can add up quick, but can also pay for itself if this ever happens again.
another thing to consider on the APC units - in addition to surge protection, they provide line conditioning and protect about brown outs and microdrops in voltage, which are far more destructive than surges over the long term. Keep in mind you will be replacing all those batteries every 3-4 years, though.

If it isn't raining it's pouring. Let's hope spring comes soon and sunnier days come too.

I hope everything gets better soon.

Could you get a whole house surge protection system?

What a bad streak Brent. Hope things get better for you and the family.

The power surge came from the power company, correct? If so, you should talk to them. A power surge that came from them, and caused damage, is something they pay for. It's a real bugger to get them to admit to that fact, then comply and pay but I've been successful in the past. They have to supply the correct voltage, give or take a few percent (but I don't recall that number). Anything outside of that but wasn't caused by an external force (car taking out a pole/transformer, lightning...) is what they're responsible for.

And I think I get too busy to hang around much sometimes, but compared to your recent string of events, I sure can't claim excuses.

I'm a little late to this thread, but hope things are falling in place again for you, Brent! :thumb:

Thanks guys! I appreciate the kind comments. My wife is slowly getting better, but not nearly fast enough to suit her. I suppose she's not only hurting but really getting pissed at hurting; if that makes any sense. The physician said he wouldn't even talk about when she may be able to go back to part time work for another 2 weeks.

On the bright side, I did get my taxes finished and sent in already. I hate doing my taxes so bad that it's crazy. It seems like I can't force myself to even start on them until sometime in April. I suppose being at home a bit lately left me with enough time to escape out to my office to get them done 'early' (for me) this year. I guess I ought to be happy. They weren't neither good nor bad, but about what I expected. At least there weren't any nasty surprises like I've had at times in the past.

I'm being beckoned now....peace. :flowers:
