Nixon, do you ever cut with an axe?

Some times I do. Just for trimming and smaller stuff mainly. Maybe that is why my shoulders are known to hurt me... I use a Kelly Perfect #32 I've had for a long while. Holds a very nice edge if you don't hit some thing you shouldn't...

I suppose it is part of my prepper plans for SHTF... If the fuel is low, and dry wood is available, or the saw is broken. Better than nothing for darn sure. I try to keep in practice to some extent. I also find a good sharp hand hatchet a great thing to have right along with the axe.

I use a Sotz maul for splitting, had it for years. Rarely need to use a wedge when using it...

Anyone else here have and use an axe?

Regards, Kirk

Kirk, can't say that I have recently . I do have to admit that Gransfors Bruks , and Wetterlings have tempted me though. Does a fiskars hatchet count ? I keep one in my saw box,and use it often .

Anything witha good sharp edge you swing by hand counts if your out of fuel or the saw is busted...I think. I even would count a good machete if you have one. I do.

If pwer isn't an option hand tools like these will give you an option. With out hem you wouuld not have any. Amazing how a well sharpened axe will cut BTW. Faster than you might think, and with less effort too, IMHO. But then again I'm not trying to heat my home with them either....I just mess around for the most part.

I have several standard axes. Two firemens axes and some Double bits too. Hatchets just do a hachet job but they are handy when limbing a downed tree.
Honestly I cannot say how many of these tools I have.

My favorite will always be a good doublebit on a real hickory handle. The Plastic ones are worthless.

Plastic handles work OK on Splitters and malls but nothing beats a good piece of hickory.

Sometimes it is just easier to get the axe out.

No oil, no gas, not chain to tighten. And swinging a good sharp double bit into green wood is somehow a stress reliever.

I have never had any trouble getting a axe started.

Oh, I have. Really, to be honest, I have trouble getting me started to use the axe. You'll hate me anyway because my axe has a plastic handle. :yum:

I have an axe, a couple of hatchets, machete (3, I think) and several hand saws. I got them just because ...... remember that I'm a semi-prepper.

They don't get a lot of use. I get them out about once a year just to prove I can still use them but I'd never get a job as a lumberjack that's for sure. The older I get the harder it is to swing that axe for any length of time and, to be honest, I always found that a good saw was preferable to an axe for most things but some things only an axe will do.

My tool of choice though, and I just used the bejeez out of it the past couple of days, is a 12" arborist's chain saw. That's the best saw I ever owned and the first one I reach for when stuff needs doing.

Hey Kirk !
There's a chance that I'll add an axe to my collection . If I do , I'll try to post pics of it ,my maul ,wedge ,and other firewood stuff .
I'm really hoping for some cooler weather so that I can get at the stack of poles I've collected. Wanted to go out this last weekend , but pretty sure that I've got bronchitis . At any rate breathing is kind of painful .
