Newbie looking to buy a cat

I have a chance to buy a snowcat, however i don’t know what it is. Looks like a spryte but I have yet to see anything like it on the web. The top portion is fiberglass. The cat used to belong to Weber county search and rescue. They said it was bought out of Logan Utah so I’m assuming it’s a thiokol of some kind? It has a Ford 250 straight 6 (date on engine says 71) with an auto of some kind. The cat has no badges of a manufacturer that I could see. The current owner says he thinks it was home built. In my opinion from my limited research It has way to much in common with a thiokol to be home built. I looked at other posts on the rear diffs and this one doesn’t appear to match an OC 12 or a c4. Any help would be appreciated.

Great thank you. Any body know what something like this would be worth? It runs/ drives. It does need a new brake master cylinder.

On the one hand condition would be the major determining factor. But you also need to establish a baseline, and I think the machine closest to this would be a Thiokol Spryte. The extended cab models of those have four doors and this machine has three. Four doors would be nicer in terms or egress for the rear passengers. The later model Sprytes, the 1200 models, used a Ford 300 I-6 and C6 transmission. I suspect this has a C4 transmission. Once again, I'd give the advantage to the Spryte in terms of power train.

I look at ksl.com regularly for used snowcats. There was what I thought was a pretty decent four door Spryte for sale, and the asking price was $15K. I would have thought it would have sold faster than it did (it's gone, now). There is currently a four-door 1200 model Spryte priced at $40K, but I think that's too high... by more than a little (IMHO).

My gut is this is worth a bit less than $15K, and that's assuming it runs well, and the master cylinder issue is a relatively easy fix. But in all honesty snowcat prices have come up substantially over the last few years and my analysis may be low.

Good Luck!

Before someone else asks:

Inquiring minds want to know: Whats the deal with the Tucker next to this machine?

Thank you that is exactly where I priced it as well. The Tucker is pretty sweet, not sure if he wants to sell it. Here is a better picture of it.

I say if it checks out to your liking and ability to "fix" it to your standards, get it.
As for pricing, They are going up in value, price is what on is will ing to pay. Ebay had a 1202 that just sold for 30k I believe.
I have a 1202 and it ran good. I was the first to make contact with the seller. I request first right of refusal and he agreed. When I showed up, he said "I think I priced it too low! My phone has not stopped ringing!" (it costs more that 15k) Shortly there after, the work began as the issues that I was unaware of and the seller did not say. Take a close look or take someone who knows these things with you. Knowledge is power. I just did a track rebuild and the cost to me was over 2k without replacing the any grousers. Not to mention the hours of "fun" figuring out how to do or not do things. This site is great for that.
Enjoy.
