Hi Folks.
I joined a month ago to help a friend out with a question.
I never thought I would be back asking you questions of my own.
I have not made an impulse buy in over twenty five years. Well today I was delivering (UPS) to an old guy and he had this vehicle in his yard. I looked at it and remember riding in these when I skied the back bowls out west. He works for the National Forest Dept. in my state. They bought a Bombi in 1975 and he has maintained it since. To make a long story short, I have to go get it when I get time.

Here is what I know of it.
He grooms the cross country ski trails for them and has been their mechanic for a long time out of his house. They must have funded his pole building because it is a gear heads dream come true. This guy could probably fabricate anything he wanted to if he had to.
He maintained it since new. He has a ton of parts in his garage. Clutch plates, filters, hoses, a lot. I didn't have time to dig. I asked why he doesn't use it and he told me the Forest Dept got him a new bigger & better one and that one has sat since. 7 years. He drives it around the house to keep it running but told me it needs carb work that he has not done since the new one arrived. I know a lot of people that will vouch for this guys honest and expert opinion & character. They know him as the old coot that wrenches the Forestry Dept. vehicles. He told me it is a hell of a deal in his opinion. He has the owners & parts manuals from new along with the maintenance logs since new. It is a 1975 Bombardier Bombi. All equipment is there. It is complete. Runs but needs carb work. He has the tracks up as he is going to let it set & told me you should never let it sit for an extended period of time on the ground.
This was not for sale. I just started looking at it when I delivered to him and he called his boss to see if they wanted to get rid of it. Next thing you know….

What I was wondering is what type or years should you look out for IE: lemons.
Is Bombi a decent one or low grade that never made it big. Anything you can tell me on this would be much appreciated. I know I should have asked this BEFORE buying it but what should you look for and what are the common weak points or flaws in the design of this thing. Is there a guide book your club has BEFORE buying one of these. I know most if not all of you think I’m nuts for doing this as the whole day I was thinking what in the Hell am I going to do with this thing. If it turns out to be a diamond in the rough Than I have no objection to restoring it to stock.

A little background on me. I restore vintage automobiles to stock so the mechanical aspects would not bother me. I have no clue why I bought this but it looks like a neat piece of machinery that could fit in my stable of automotive history. If you do not own a ski resort just what do you guys do with these???? I will get pics when I can get back out there. I am going to shoot/post a couple of pics of the parts list and motor parts list so you guys can have a clue of what I’m talking about. As of now I don’t even know the model number. Hope this pic thing works.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to figure my latest bonehead move out.
Joel.

Congrats. Sometimes the impulse buys are the most fun / exciting of all. It sounds like you found a good one. I bet your still grinning ear to ear.
Love to see some of your car collection too, when you feel like sharing.
Welcome to Forums Forums.
Enjoy and post often.

Hi Folks.
Is Bombi a decent one or low grade that never made it big.
. . .
If you do not own a ski resort just what do you guys do with these????
Joel.
Joel, I don't own a Bombi or a ski resort but here is my take on these things. First, the Bombi is a high quality small groomer and the company that built it made great machines. The Bombi was a fairly early "modern" example of a small purpose built snowcat. Prior years had snowcats used for more general purposes with a 1 model fits most needs mentality, but the Bombi was designed to work on trails for grooming and doing similar other tasks.

As far as what you do with them, well that depends on a lot of things, for me, its just take it out and have fun with it. My Snow Trac goes on the roads and through the fields, even into town when the snow is coming down hard. When I bought mine it was for the purpose of having a fun toy, nothing more. Others here have them to access remote cabins, to haul equipment and supplies into remote areas, and I know of at least 2 members who run commercial tours in the back country. Others put them on trailers and haul them out to remote mountain areas to use them to access back country ski areas that otherwise could not be reached, and some don't even run their but have restored them for the purpose of taking them to shows (especially true for those models with military roots).

You're in luck finding this forum because one of the members, "Boggie", is not only extremely knowledgeable concerning things Bombardier, but he also has many parts for them.
Congrats on your find. One of the first questions folks ask me about my old Bombardier SkiDozer is "what are you going to use it for"? This was an embarassing question until I just decided to fess up and reply "for fun". I did find an area ski trail grooming person who might like me to help trails in my neck of the woods.

The Bombi is a great little snowcat. I've got three Tuckers and almost bought a Bombi out of Alaska because I think so highly of them.

They were, and still are, used extensively back east to clear snow from parking lots, sidewalks, etc. That's why they have rubber tracks. They have been used to pull a trail grooming drag for cross country ski trails and snowmobile trails that are faily flat. And, they work great as a general all purpose snowcat for travel in snowing conditions. For example, they are used in Alaska to run into town for supplies. They have a reputation of being a great little work horse. Very utilitarian in performance.

The biggest concern is the all rubber tracks if that's what you have. They can be cracked or chewed up and may break with use if they are old. Finding replacements can be a challenge. Some Bombi's have metal cleats on rubber tracks. These are the best for traction in deep snow or on a slope.

All in all, you made a good buy for your first snowcat. Go through everything like you would in any restoration. Knowing that it has sat for 7 years should indicate that you can't assume anything but, it sounds like it was maintained well so you probably have a great littlte Bombi! Hope this helps. Rocketman

Hi PENTH20 Your story sounds allot like how I came into owning my Thiokol 601. I was on a hunting trip when I saw it sitting behind a road commission building broken, rusting, & sinking into the ground. I don't know why, . .But I knew rite then & there I had to have it. Because it still belonged to the near by USAF base it took 2.5years (lots of red tape) from that first day to the day I loaded it up on my trailer to take it home. I also like to restore old & unique things. I will use mine for show because I am restoring it back to it's original condition when the Air Force received it back in 1963. I also live in a high snow amount region so it will also be used just for fun. You should check out my restoration pics. on the SnowCat restoration page under 601 Restoration. Congrats. on your find:thumb:

Thank you guys for taking the time to reply.
I think I got this for the simple reason that I love the history of machinery. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it but it is a neat lil item. Actualy about the only thing I can do with this is have fun with it.
I live in an semi remote area so I will get a lot of use out of it.
Thank you for the help and don't forget I'm the newbie when I get it home and start bombardiering (sorry, had to) you guys with stupid questions.
I noticed you are all close to my State with Weatherby being very near as his sig says upper Michigan. I live in Pentwater, MI. Weatherby. It is the town below Ludington where the carferries run from MI to WI. Where are you in upper MI? Or are you talking UPPER MI. the U.P. Speaking of the car ferry, this is a couple of pics I took on the last run accross for the season.
Thanks guys.
Also, Let me know if this is a strict forum. I know some forums do not like it if you post pics or talk about anything that is not what the forum is about.
Weatherby, I just re-read the post. You must be talking K.I. Saywer.

Ya I know Pentwater well, when I was a kid our family would vacation there on lake Michigan during the summers. I live near Flint and that's where I have my 601 and do all the work on it, and when I'm not working I spend the rest of my time at our house on lake Superior at Whitefish Point. And yes that is K.I.Saywer AFB I was referring to.:thumb:

Nice to meet ya. Pentwater is full of retired auto & cops. I probably know some of your friends. I'm leaving for Grand Maris right now. I have property up there and Lake Gogiebic. I have to go check on the properties. You know how those Yoopers survey before they build. Infact we have a little icon that shows how they survey :thumb: Yep, thars the line i'm gonna build my house right here. :}
For all I know I have a new neighbor. Right in my yard.
Have to hit the road now. It is all fog right now and gonna be slow moving. Did you guys get the snow we did?
