i am getting a price from a local shop to see how much they would charge to build grousers, tire guides, and backing plates. wondering if anyone else is interested in some as well maybe get the price lower with volume purchase.
my grousers are 36.5" long "J" style for a thiokol 1200.

They need to be made from 4130 steel on the cleats and heat treated to RC 38
Or they will bend

look around you can buy used tracks and belting reasonable lots of work lots of jack and ginger but worth the time

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but what does it mean to heat treat something to "RC 38"? A quick Google search didn't turn up much on the subject (No doubt I should probably be using Bing....).

I'm going to be rebuilding the drop-center tracks on my ST 1404 Imp this summer or next and as part of the project I'm hoping to straighten out some of the "paddle" style grousers. It should be pretty easy to heat them up with torch and flatten out the bent parts, but will that undo the heat treating? If so, is heat treating something that mortals can do or do I need to sub it out to a welding shop? Or is it best to just leave bent things bent?

Thanks

Ron

Heating and bending them to straighten should not take the temper out of them if you don't go overboard with the torch. Undy is correct about the spec. That is not all that hard and is done for tensile strength.

I'm not experienced enough to know from first hand information. But, in my search for replacement grousers, I have found 3 users that have used normal A36 angle iron with good success. Has there been a history of failure that suggests the need for high quality heat treatment, or is this just trying to duplicate the OEM grousers?

Cloudcap, your Imp ST drop center cleats are not heat treated they are mild steel you can straighten them cold and weld on them all you want.
Thiokol/LMC J style cleats are the heat treatable metal to make them springy instead of bendy which eventually leads to cracky.
