New garage door opener

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
Today as a house warming gift I purchased and installed a new Garage Door opener on my Son's new home .
Its been about 20 years since I installed one . I like the new ones with the automatic light that comes on if you break the safety beam .
My Son was telling me he had a labor bid of $400 to install one !That was just the labor cost !!! Thats crazy ! It took about 2 1/2 hours and I really goofed off because of my sore shoulder and never broke a sweat . How in the hell can people afford to pay that?

What you would not pay for is not what everyone else would not pay for. I know people that pay to have their lawn mowed, or a new faucet installed. Heck, there are some folks that pay for sex!

There are plenty of people that will pay $400 installation plus $150 for the garage door opener -- otherwise that guy would not be in business.

Allen, I agree with you about the install costs . . . but I have my limits. When I had my workshop built I paid to have 3 garage door openers installed as part of installing the garage doors. However when 2 of the openers on my home failed after about 10 and 13 years respectively I changed those out myself, just as you did. Changing a door opener is a lot easier than installing one because the mounting hardware is already in place. Heck when one of mine went out I bought the same kind of unit and only had to swap the head unit and attach it to the existing track, chain, etc.

I think some of the installers get a bit crazy with their pricing. I called in a plumber (I will mess with electrical but not with plumbing) to fix a leak under a sink. While the guy was there I had him install a new faucet in my daughter's bathroom. I told the service in advance it would be done. The faucet and everything else needed was waiting. They charged $200 to install that faucet. I was pissed. But my wife was home, I was out of town. Never will I use that service again. Total bill was $400. I'm still angry.

Bob they charged you so much because they didn't sell you the faucet.

Is it any surprise why places like Home Depot and Lowes do well. Honestly, if you had to deal with the average home owner day in and day out you would charge those rates too. I think it is perfectly justified even if it is extremely high.
