New Computer?

Av8r3400

Gone Flyin'
Just looking for some input here...

My two computers that I have are both older that 5 years. Both are operating on XP-Pro. My laptop that I use mostly is now getting very "troubled" by the needs of all the MS updates and anti-virus (Kaspersky) software that must operate all the time.

Is Windows 7 any good? 98 was good, Millennium (2000) sucked, XP is good, Vista sucks...

I've toyed actually with an Apple computer. Am I barking up the wrong tree with that?? I really don't relish this idea...

I can tell you that Win 7 is good. The computer I'm using right now came with Win xp. The thing would have to be re-booted every other day. Why? because of the "windows rot" That is when you run xp for a time.. it all of a sudden slows down. You cold boot - it is snappy. Then all of a sudden after a while, you open a program, or switch windows, it thrashes the hard drive. With Win 7 I never re-boot. And the thing is as snappy as a cold boot. I'm not alone in knowing this. Everyone who has Win 7 reports the same.
You have to find out first hand. As far as going to the dark side, (apple) don't do it.

I am running Windows 7 Business 64 bit and love it. I bought a Sony VAIO about two years ago after only having a HP for two years. The case on my HP just kept cracking and falling apart and HP said it was from abuse. The first case fell apart after 8 months.

As for an operating system you don't have much choice but to go to Win 7 as Vista was junk and XP is being phased out.

Windows 7 came on my newest laptop. I'm a convert. It works as good or better than xp pro. Tiger Direct has some excellent buys on workstations or laptops. I bought a couple of gateways from them. A netbook (mini laptop w/ vista) and a regular laptop w/ win 7. Both have worked flawlessly.

I use the netbook as a workstation replacement. I plug a regular keyboard and full size monitor into it and it works great. It has double the storage of my old workstation and a faster processor and it cost less than 300 bucks

Windows 7 is great. It is on my new laptop and I can do most everything I want on it. For me that is saying something as I work in the field and all of the funny stuff gets put there before I give it to my customers.

Apple is a personal choice. Lots like it, I have one and I am warm to it. I can install and run it, I do not see the big hype. It is a good computer. The biggest thing is to make sure that the software that you use is available for it. It has a growing following, it is still only 10 to 15 percent of world wide desktops.

XP is not being supported anymore by MS.
It’s best to move on if you can afford it.
MS makes a great free antivirus software.
I also run Vista and love it.

My understanding is that Microsoft is longer supporting service pack 2 of XP, but you're still fine with service pack 3. I just bought a machine that was downgradeable to XP from Windows 7. I tried it first with Windows 7, but it wouldn't play nice with some older software in our network. Tried virtual XP mode and that didn't work, either.

I finally bit the bullet and did an XP factory recovery on the work station and all's well now. The lesson being, older software and Windows 7 don't get along.

I must of read it wrong.
This is the mess that my wife received.

I have Apples for work and a Dell laptop for cruising the internet and odds and ends. I have been an Apple user since my Apple II with 64K of ram. I love Apple and tolerate my PC. My opinion is that unless you need a Mac for specific uses
or are an oldtimer like me it's not worth switching. My Dell cost me $750 my Macbook pro cost me $4500.00. I will not go into a Mac vs PC tirade that has been done to death. Personally I would not trade my Mac for 20 PCs.
Just my $.02.

Well I sure do appreciate a Apple user who is honest. Thanks for the post:clap: The problem I've often seen is that the Apple fanboyz insist that winblows and micro$oft plain suck. And that the rest of the world just don't get it. What ever OS does what you want it to - is ok in my book. That just so happens to be MS Windows.

Hey PC man, Now I'm mad :whistling:

Two things I'd like explained to me.

1. Why do PCs come with solitaire while Macs come with Chess?

2. When I shut down my Mac I hit "shutdown" to close my PC I have to hit "start". :yum:

Ok.

To be a gentlemen:

Your first question:
I have chess and solitaire on my Win 7 OS.

and even a few more. I can even play games that require direct X 11. Mac? not compatible.

#2 The start button pops up an array of features. One of them is shutdown.

Windows doesn't require a dedicated "shutdown" on the desktop. We know that if you want to do something.. you "start" to do it.

Those two things are worth $3,750.00 to you?:wow::yum::yum::yum:

J/K

America doesn't require a dedicated "leader" in the White house. We know that if you want to do something.. you "hope and change" to do it.

Is that what you had ind mind :yum::yum:
