Net-books?

Av8r3400

Gone Flyin'
I'd like to get the wife an iPad for her birthday, but there is a minor i$$ue...

Has anyone bought one of the "net book" type laptops that are being marketed now? What brand and model?

Any general thoughts on these things??

I had a Dell Mini-10 a couple years ago. It was OK for a little while, but the weird screen size was too much to overcome. (1024x600) I sold it to my boss for his daughter (elementary school).

Personally, I will be looking at a tablet, but the budget probably won't accommodate it.

Like JPR, I got one, an ACER, for our vacation in the UK earlier this year. Whether you like it or not depends a lot on what you want to do with it. It doesn't come with a lot of RAM and the maximum upgrade is only to 2 meg. There's no CD reader or burner on it. You have to get an external one if you need it or transfer stuff via a flash drive. So, it's NOT a workhorse, small, laptop computer by any means but it does what it was designed to do and it does it fairly well. It's small and easy to tote around. I really like mine.

Also, it doesn't come loaded with much software, mainly 3-month trial stuff, but there is a ton of free stuff on the web that that runs just fine.

I keep mine by my chair in front of the TV and if it gets boring, I turn it on and see what's happening on FF.

i bought an Acer Amethyst Purple 10.1" Aspire One AO532h for Mrs Bam for xmas...i paid $169 at MicroCenter..it was refurbished but had the same warranty as a new one.

we are going to upgrade the Ram from 1 gig to 2 gigs soon. it is great for surfing the net, doing most stuff that i do on my laptop except for 3D gaming. it has a 160Gig HD which is plenty for saving most things. if you need more you can add an external HD.

I got a gateway net book from tiger direct last spring. Since they are so small I got the fully loaded one as I do not have any desire to open it up for adding memory or anything. I got the little bit bigger screen, hoping that would help with my old eyes, 11 inches. it does help. I also got 2 gigs of memory 220 gig hard drive and I'm tickled with it. I used it this past weekend while on the road visiting the grand babies. It can a run a little over 3 hours on the battery which no other laptop I've had can come close to.
I also have a monitor and keyboard that I plug into for using it at home, and it works fantastic. Just like having a tower system, only this little booger has more power than my old workstation tower. :D

This was the 1st gateway I have bought in years and I am very happy with it. It replaced a Dell full size laptop and I like the net book better. I'll never buy another Dell. I like it so much that I bought a Gateway full size laptop a few month later and so far I've been very happy with both of them. I'll always keep a net book in my stable from here on out. Very handy little devices. As ETF mentioned you do need an external DVD drive for loading CD software, but those are rather cheap and easy to acquire also.

Thanks for the input.

The main thing she would be doing is email (personal and work), some net surfing but mostly playing card games while watching TV. For this I have a hard time justifying $600+ for an iPad that won't do as much as a Net Book...

For that I don't think she'd like the net book unless you can hook it up to a regular monitor and keyboard. If that is not an option then I'd go for a regular laptop. The one I mentioned in my earlier post was a refurbished one from Tiger Direct for around 400 bucks. It is a Gateway and has worked flawlessly. Better than the Dell I paid over 3 times that amount for. I got the 15" screen and think it is plenty big for the display and it's lighter than the 17" one I used to have.

..... a few weeks ago I came off a cruise in Tampa and had around 8 hours to kill before our flight. The family decided to rent a car and drive around Tampa, while I chose to sit around the airport and rest my old dogs. I had a deck of cards, from the casino on the ship, and sat at a table playing various solitaire games. I had more younger kids looking at me like I was nuts. I guess they find it funny that I use my phone for stupid things like.......talking to people!!!:hammer:

Really, Dave, it's okay. The Bears aren't out of the league, just out of the playoffs. They get another go next season.

Do you need a hug? :flowers:

This is what The Mrs. is currently using. She knows so many different versions of solitaire played with actual cards it isn't funny. Some using up to 3 decks...

Here is one of the better deals on Tiger Direct today. For checking email you sure do not need a powerhouse. For playing solitare or that tile game any laptop would do.

This is a brand new one for 349.
Compaq Presario CQ62-219WM Notebook PC - Intel Celeron 900 2.2GHz, 2GB, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium

Do you have this computer, Doc? Everything looks great except for the dinosaur processor.

No, this is not the one I have. Mine is a Gateway that is not available from Tiger Direct at this time.

This was one of the cheaper full size laptops they had on the site yesterday.
Agreed on the dinosaur processor, but for card games and checking emails I'm sure it would be more than adequate. Plus it has more disk storage and 2 gigs of memory, except for the processor it is better equipped than the off lease dells listed below.

If you like Dell they also had some dell laptops that came back from lease for pretty much the same price.

Dell Latitude D620 Notebook PC (Off-Lease)
Dell Latitude D620 Notebook PC - Intel T2400 Core Duo 1.83GHz, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD, DVDRW, 14.1" WXGA (Off-Lease) $349

or here is one for $319:
Dell Latitude D620 Notebook PC (Off-Lease)
Dell Latitude D620 Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66GHz, 1GB DDR2, 60GB HDD, Combo, 14.1" WXGA, Windows XP Pro 32-bit (Off-Lease)
Just $319.97

I'm still looking for something. I stopped and looked at Best Buy yesterday. I've never bought a computer from a box store. They do have some nicely spec'ed machines at a decent price.

Any thoughts from you experts? I won't spend any money on an HP, but they also have Toshiba, Sony, Gateway and others...

What about [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-G560-067999U-Laptop-Black/dp/B0040X4LZI/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1296142979&sr=1-5"]this[/ame] one?

Costco has a nice Acer for $650, with a $150 rebate. Has an i3 in it. My Mom just got one.

The i3 is a good entry level. Some of the lesser Intel processors with older names, are really the latest, but with limited feature sets.
