my new snow trac engine

I just bought this 4700 miles on rebuild. It came out of a splitwindow buss that was totaled in the front. $900.
- 1600 cc air cooled VW engine for sale. Serial number AH484927 Single port with doghouse oil cooler. Engine has only 4600 miles on a complete professional rebuild, including new clutch, machined heads, new valves & guides, machined crank, new main & rod bearings, new rods, pistons & rings, new ignition, fuel pump, carb, generator and starter.
This is my next summer project.

I'm missing a page out of my book flip the engine on the flywheel end and take a pic of the bottom. I think you have the coveted dual oil pressure relief case. as far as I can see by SN. that case should have been a dual port motor also inspect it see if it has 8 mm studs or 10 mm studs

I needed it up on end so I could see the bottom, but I see you have the dog house oil cooler .this is a good thing it will keep cool air blowing to all cylinders the down side is, you will have to alter your intake scoop to accommodate the bulge in the back

Oh, so Lyndon found you a $900 engine, and you were showing me a $4000 engine, NOW I see how it works...

I think I have a line on a 1600 SP now for about $700, just have to see what shape it's in. I almost sent for a GEX TURNKEY engine, but did some on line lookups... wow, usually you can find someone writing good reviews about poop, but did not fine one good about GEX VW engines......

Jim if you can find an old style fan housing and oil cooler than it will require no modds but that dog house style oil cooler is a better set up and worth a little extra work.

Is this the only real modification for the two port 1600 to fit in a ST?

Thanks

Maybe I am wrong but it appears to be a single port engine with the upright dog house oil cooler. Was this installed because this is a van engine and puller harder requiring the type three oil cooler?

Learning here...

That looks just about perfect. Curious how much of a difference in power you'll have once you put it in.
I have been pulling off the 009 distributors on anything I have and replacing it with the correct stock svda or dvda units and they seem to run much better, especially at low rpms. I also just had Tim at Volz Bitz up in Yelm, WA rebuild my snow trac carb and boy did that ever make a huge difference. Starts right up hot or cold and idles great right off the bat.
Just took mine out last weekend for the first time this year and all went well, although not much snow yet. Just crossing my fingers that it all holds together so I can come up for the jamboree!

through the years it's hard to find engine parts that haven't been mixed up there are even adaptor seals to mix and match different oil coolers. its not uncommon too see this kind of stuff my engine is this way new Brazilian case with 1776 jugs and single port heads.

I think the oil tower was removed then a smaller back was put on.??
I have a picture of a remote cooler.
