My laptop is overheating ...

It's getting a little long in the tooth (bought it 9/2007), but I want to get another year or so out of it. It keeps overheating and shutting down, which is particularly frustrating when trying to do a backup. Currently, I have it elevated on 1/2" drink coasters to help the circulation beneath it, but it still over heats. Do those laptop cooling pad thingies work that well? Any other suggestions? I just did a factory restore and that did help speed it up a bunch, but I still have the heat problem.

It will depend really if the cooling pads will work. The first laptop I was issued by the school board was a Toshiba which would blister your legs with in about 1 hours use. My current Lenovo runs all day long and stays ice cold. I would suggest you try Lobo's suggestion first as it might simply be dust buildup around the fan and if that doesn't work then you might try the cooling pad. One other suggestion is perhaps having it checked out by a technician if this is something new. It could be the battery itself as they do have some history of burning when they get old. It could also be other problems from the mother board to power supply failing.

Can't help much with overheating but 2007 is old?!?!?

Damn, one of my daily laptops (that I use for both work and personal use so it's on 50+ hours a week) is over 10 years old.

Along with what lobo mentioned, I found there's certain things that make the computer get hot, fast. Videos and some Firefox options that need changed if you're a heavy Firefox user.

I've tried the canned air stuff, but it didn't do much. I don't run many things that tax the CPU (currently at about 5%) but my memory is about half full.

I thought the laptop cooling pads were just to keep your lap cool while using the laptop on your lap. Would not help at all with the laptop overheating.
It is shutting down to save itself, rather than burn itself up. Sounds like it needs a good cleaning like Lobo suggested. If you prefer not to get inside of it take it to a pc repair shop. I'm guessing they could have it fixed fairly fast.

Mine did the same thing and one of the techs at work took it apart and found a dead fan. Also had them overheat when the battery would no longer hold a charge. The laptop keeps trying to charge the battery and it just continues to generate more and more heat.

Interesting info, Squerly. The fan definitely works -- it runs full blast on occasion. I just took out the battery, and it's not warm at all. Looks like I might have to take this dinosaur apart (that's for the Zoomer -- get a new laptop, would ya?:w00t2:).

The one that flew off the roof of the car going across the bridge in Parkersburg overheats once in awhile because the heat sink got a little banged up ............ :whistling:

I just have to remember to keep the heat sink open and it's good, Can't set it on your lap or a pillow too long!

That one still works??? Surprise surprise. A good one for sure.

Do you still have the name and address for the guy who returned it to you? If so please send it to me.

It gets used every day! It's on constantly and sets on the living room table.

Sadly I don't have his name but I did send him a nice reward!

Go buy a big sub-zero fridge. Plug it on, set on low, remove shelves, sit inside with laptop. Yer good to go.
I am here to help.

I got one at Costco that has two fans. It helps keep the 'puter cooler, as well as my lap. Unfortunately, they don't carry it
any longer, Amazon does have one very much the same which has moveable fans and has gotten good ratings.

Now that's a great story. LOL. I can't believe it took a pounding like that. HP should of bought that laptop back and used it in an ad.

Bimp.

Well, I finally got around to taking the laptop apart and sure enough, it seems it was wearing a small fur coat inside over the cooling fan exhaust vent. Once I got that thing shaved outta there, she's back to purrin' like a kitten and runnin' much faster too!

When I cleaned out my wife's laptop you could have knitted a sweater with the lint.
