my J5 finally arrives

after much searching I found this J5 that should be ideally suited to my needs - as soon as the Ford 300/6 is installed this week, progress can begin on pushing in some new training trails for my sleddogs - I'm looking forward to some excellent trails to run on next winter https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/943273_10151447105422135_1825384595_n.jpg

good point - lol - we'll see what transpires once the bush work is done - might even put a cab off a small vehicle on it, complete with heater, windshield wipers - you know, a touch of civilization - :yum:

Nice looking J5 Sleddogracer, :thumb: I also like the trailer it's sitting on, it appears to be a Trailtech ? made in Canada .

Nice machine, with a rather bullet proof looking cage. Quite the rear hitch. Looks ready for some serious work....and fun.

Great engine the old 300. Hope it serves you as well as they have done for me.

Regards, Kirk

I was so busy watching the J5 pull into the yard Weatherby, I barely looked at the trailer - so far I'm really pleased with the J5 and the more I look at it the more pleased I am - hardly any modifications need to be done for it to do everything I need to do with it

despite repeated assurances that a Ford 300/6 would bolt right up to the transfer case, it doesn't come close to fitting - I either need an adapter plate, or a Ford 6 cyl industrial motor - I need some advice and/or leads - any help will be very much appreciated - Al

I've used a Novak adaptor in a Jeep. It might be worth seeing if they offer anything, if you can't find any direct fit engines.

something must have happened and my last post didn't take. your j5 would have come with a Chrysler flat head 6 about 80 horsepower. the ford will not bolt up to a small ring ford engine you could install an engine trans combo with a jack shaft modification. or depending on your transmission you may just get away with a bell housing.

this one had an industrial Ford inline 6 in it - a 250 I believe - the bell housing on the 300/6 is out of a pick up and doesn't bolt up to the transmission in the J5 - the J5 bell housing is about 2 inches wider than the bell housing on the 300/6 and the bolt pattern is way off too - the centre hole is a different size as well - I'll see if I can find an adapter plate to join the 300/6 to the existing transmission - otherwise there will be modifications needed to the drive shaft and shifting linkage - nothing is simple when you want it to be - lol

if I change the existing transmission for a 4 speed out of a pickup, what, if any, changes need to be made to get 4 speeds forward, one reverse? ( or is that a function of the differential? ) ( shows how much I know - lol )

motor, bell housing, and transmission all bolted in - had to re-position the motor and transmission mounts - if someone tells you a Ford 300/6 bolts in place of a Ford industrial inline 6, don't believe them - so far we've found one thing that is interchangeable - both motors take a Fram PH8A oil filter - lol - ( although a shortened version of the filter makes it possible to change the filter once the 300/6 is lowered into place ) - next step, custom fitting of alternator tensioner, cable for the throttle rather than a solid connector, and a reshaped and longer rod to the clutch - then a custom exhaust, a bit of wiring, and it should be ready to fire up - then a custom designed remote shifter for the transmission - the "bolt in conversion" has been hardly that - lol

Nice looking machine, keep the picks coming ! Most J5's have gone through a lot of owners and a lot of mods over the years, only limited by the width of the hull and the imagination of the builder.
J5 Bombardier:biggrin:

It's a little late, but industrial engines use a common bell housing, as the standards for them are set by the ASAE... They come numbered, depending on the HP of the application. The common ones are no. 1 through no.4. This is done so engine manufactures can easily fit their engine into any application. My bet is a Perkins 4 banger diesel would bolt right up, if the ASAE bell housings are the same size.

The bolt pattern on the end of the engine block the bell housing bolts to is the same isn't it??

I'm finding that out - the information I had in the beginning was that the 300/6 was a bolt in process to the existing transmission - had I known what I know now, I would have chosen something else - perhaps a V6 with an automatic transmission - I'm looking forward to getting the J5 running - it doesn't help that I have no shop to work in or many of the tools needed, but we'll get it done - no one ever said I wasn't stubborn - lol

the bell housing on the industrial inline 6 was nothing like the bell housing on the 300/6 - the industrial bell housing is 2 inches wider and none of the bolt holes match the 300/6 - the transmission was different too - so different that it was impossible to get an adapter plate to work - fortunately, I was able to get a universal that fit the transmission on one side and the drive shaft on the other - now I'm in the process of making a mounting bracket for the alternator because the old bracket doesn't fit the new block and the bracket from the new motor is too low for any adjustment because of the width of the tub - even things like the radiator hose present minor challenges because the rad outlet is on the opposite side of the outlet on the motor and has to be routed underneath the fan to leave enough clearance - nothing is insurmountable, but it's all very time consuming, to say nothing of blowing my budget all to hell - lol :yum:
