Just bought a used Muskeg with a flathead 251. What are the common parts numbers and sources for the old flathead Oil Filter, Gas Line filter, air filter, spark plugs etc?

Thanks, I'm in Fort Good Hope NWT Canada. Plans for the Muskeg are hauling wood, firewood and logs. Maybe some oilfield work too. Don't really know. Drive around, make some trails, etc.

Ordered the parts from NAPA, thanks for the help.
I'm lucky because their is another Muskeg of the same vintage sitting at the dump here in town. No motor and some body pieces are missing, but tracks, startor, tranny, body tub, other stuff too.

Glad you found the parts.

I'd be jumping on any good spare parts from the one at the dump

I use my Muskeg for wood gathering, also.

Are the old Muskegs able to shift on the fly? Seems as though I can't get this thing into 4th gear. Also the throttle is half way excel, second half decel like an old grader. pto winch is a nice touch and I didn't know this when I bought it but the thing has a deck extension on it that will fit my quad or snowmobil.

Thanks, looks like i'll be pulling one of the springs off the suspension and 3 tires off unit at the dump to get this thing into working shape. Though I've only put about 10 kilometers on the unit I'm impressed with its ability to climb over rough terrain. I crawled over my stack of logs that i had outside without issue.
Cool machines. I'll see if I can post some photos of work in progress.

Lovely piece of machinery. Good luck in all your ventures in it.

I'll try to post some photos soon. 8 of my tires are in rough shape and one of the springs on the one side is busted. From the Muskeg at the dump, we've pulled the tracks off and all 16 of the wheels, and one of the springs. Thinking of turning the hull into a pull behind sled.

So question for you muskeg experts, how does the suspension work behind the front spring? I see that its all chain supported but the middle tube, does it have a piston loaded inside or what? Also, how is it for dry snow, we get upto 4 feet in a year.
I'll try to post some photos of the work.

A couple of people working on these old Muskegs I guess. Here are some shots of our work thus far.

There is a heavy spring in the "middle tube". It keeps the walking beams from over extending. It's not used in the more modern versions that have two solid walking beams.

If you can pack the snow after each storm you'll be fine on your trails.
If the snow hasn't been packed but has kind of 'set-up' you may get high centered.

Thanks for the answers, very helpful. Does the differential fluid have a drain hole too? I'll post some pics of the donor unit and what we've finished with it.

The drain is usually on the right side of the bottom of the diff. housing.
Back in a ways on the side and below the drive axle.

Well, took some time but I've got the girl working pretty decent just need some other touches. Cut the spring off with a torch, installed a different one. Fixed some of the tires, what a pain in the ass those inside tires are. Worked the carb and some other little things. Put a really nice winch line on it that I got for free. Hopefully I'll get some pics or video of us doing some work with it tonight.

Oh and used in the snow at the end of season, seems to be perfect for around here. Never got stuck except on step hills. We had about 3-4 feet of light snow cover.

Ran the beast last night, took it out to a hilly area near town. I'm amazed at the muskegs ability to climb and pull. We pulled a massive tree out of the woods with very little effort. 3 of us were limbing trees and we worked the muskeg for only a couple of minutes to drag what we worked on to block and pack. What we were doing with a quad in an hour, I can do with the muskeg in 5 minutes.
