Years ago you never heard these stories. Seems like mountain lions are becoming more aggressive.

Mountain lion kills New Mexico man
By: Jo Baeza, The Independent
07/01/2008

SILVER CITY, N.M. - New Mexico State Police confirmed the killing and eating of a 55-year-old man by a mountain lion near Silver City.

Sgt. Robert McDonald told The Independent June 26 that state police had received an autopsy report from medical examiners in Albuquerque confirming a lion was responsible for the death of Robert Nawojski.
Nawojski lived alone in a camper-trailer in the small community of Pinos Altos, about seven miles north of Silver City. According to the police report, Nawojski's brother said he liked to bathe himself at night outside the camper in summer as it is cooler. He said his brother liked being outdoors at night, looking at the stars while he was washing himself.
Nawojski was able to live independently, but his brother checked on him regularly. His brother could not reach him by phone on the night of June 17. When he couldn't get ahold of Nawojski the next day, the brother called state police and asked them to check on him.
State police called in a group of local volunteers to start a search-and-rescue mission.
Sgt. McDonald said Nawojski's partially eaten body was found about 80 yards from his camper.
"He was apparently killed outside his residence," McDonald said. "There was no evidence of any struggle."
Investigators found lion tracks as well as drag marks where the lion had dragged its kill by the shoulders and carefully covered blood and pieces of flesh with leaves and branches. The body itself was exposed when they found it.
According to state police, Game and Fish officers said the lion may have been prowling the area for a while, and may have been watching the man when he came outside to bathe at night. The lion was probably hungry, McDonald said, as the body was partially eaten.
Nawojski's camper was parked near the boundary of the Gila National Forest where the lion would normally have had a good supply of deer for prey. "As dry as it's been, the animals are going to come in looking for water," McDonald said. "Predators are opportunists. This lion probably killed the man because he was easy to get." The mountain lion that killed Nawojski was caught in a snare and killed June 25 by New Mexico Game and Fish officers.

We have had many people killed or hurt by Mountain Lions here in California . I do not know about NM ,but here in CA they are protected and have no fear of humans . The tree hugger type people got them on the indanger list . Those same people really need to do their homework and read up about Mountain Lions and learn alot more about their habitat requirements, pecking order and lifestyle . Its much like the wolf problems in ID,MTand WY that is going on .
I have 2 large cats that live right here in the same canyon where my home is . I have seen them many times . They have chased my daughters car once as she came home from work . The 16 tame geese that are on my lake and have been here for years , are all gone now . No children are allowed near the lake unless my dogs are with them . You would not believe the size of the cats footprints they have left at the waters edge .

I may get flamed for this, but nasty animals like that disappear around my house. I have taken out several bobcats with my car or pickup and and plinked a badger not too long ago. With the dogs, cats and kiddo around I don't want any of them close. There are cougars around here but they are rarely seen & W & P tries to act like they are not in Kansas. I believe a pick of a Kansas one is on here somewhere.

you wont get flamed by me either, and the cougar is my favorite big cat. Now if you tell me you are bugging them, encroaching on their known living area, or just trying to get a notch in your gun belt then, yep you got one comin. I dont think you are silly enough to go looking for them. I would like to know if your local game wardens or animal control has a way to live capture them and move them to more wilderness, yet with some food supply.

The only problem I have is with people who "predator hunt" with dogs; Cougar, coyote, wolf, etc. There were several bear-dogs working across my property a couple of years back. Have I ever mentioned how well a tooth bar works for digging?

Dispatching a problem animal, well: SSS.
